Another [self-tracking for self improvement] bites the dust
with all the wearable AI hype slowly shifting, what are the actual use cases that seem to have stuck?
... looking at rewind.ai last man standing here ...
opened up Xcode simulator ... why so small?
love to see this research on energy!
one thing that isn't mentioned is how important your environment is
noise, light, smells, *clutter*, putting off chores all stimulate senses that take up energy ... tidy up your desk!

finally found the time to keep working on this project, feeling energised and motivated
here's to wishing for more 'toy software'
#buildinpublic #indiedev #ios
OS design has always derived from the *context of interaction*. That has not changed significantly since the introduction of iOS/Android or even in desktop computing. Phones are used in the same contexts, laptops are used in the same contexts. AI won't make an impact until its in a novel context
I think what we need is more speculative design. To me, it seems futurism is in drought - no new magic interfaces to explore, no holograms, ...
I think that is why 'AI wearables' was (still is?) such an obvious hype-market the past few years - its a different context. The unfortunate part is that the context is not a useful or desirable one ...

ποΈ What software would you classify as a prop or a toy ?
A Toy can take on one or many roles when playing. A prop is never necessary for play, but its use unmistakably shapes the interaction space and its opportunities.

this is actually real

I think this is an *excellent* point. I love Manzini's "the code that binds us" for including human flourishing as a 'protected value' of human-AI interaction. I work in personal informatics and we also see the need to balance AI convenience with purpose per se...
Correct me if I'm wrong - critical thinking is a skill not an activity - I was curious what areas you've investigated where LLMs might hinder or undermine it! Or whether you found broader implications
Iβd love to learn more about the critical thinking - again seems like not all work requires it - how do you see it being used at all?
I donβt think heβs just about labour costs. Fact is, not all work is creative work. I wouldnβt rely on AI for wicked problem-style scenarios - but why wouldnβt you use it for generating code or emails that are standardised anyway?
βthe question is a visual way to ask: what do you carry with you on an every day basis - and - how are you prepared to handle the expected/unexpected?β
Enjoy! ποΈ
A poster with a backdrop of an oil painting showing a leather bag, an umbrella and a hat hanging on a wall. The foreground text reads "Whats in your rucksack?" with the subheader "Metaphorically speaking...". The bottom of the poster states the post is available 16th of February at benjibo.substack.com
Finally back into writing ποΈ Ticket to Talk this year - got 2 more lined up for February! Come visit for some conversations on toy software et al β£οΈ
excited for launch !!!
this is what I see in my head (also first day after my deadlines are gone so I have too much time π)
This is not useful feedback but slight backseat design sorry , have you tried stacked month and price vertically on the left - so checkbox can take up whole line height on right ? Yearly βsaveβ can go in middle and highlight monthly rate maybe even with the thematic bg colour like a label
I may be early in my career, but I think this also applies to academic #HCI and UC researxh regardless of your area / interest / methods
I really get that - but Iβm still on the search for a solution before I drop back to txtβ¦ Iβm using interstitial journaling at the moment - and an extra file that filters out all βjournal tasksβ that I write in it β¦ works pretty well with obsidian !
bullish on apps that can be used without excessive organisation, such as @obsidian.md over the next decade ... @notion.com is in an interesting spot here?
As we kick off the first week of quarter, I am reminded that I my mental model is *absolutely* directory structure and I have no idea how students now live their entire lives in the chaotic laundry basket that is Google Drive. This article explains it so well: www.theverge.com/22684730/stu...
Research tl;dr π¬ LLMs are parents trying their best π
Some observations from my genAI literature review:
Positives +
- LLMs make people feel seen
- LLMs encourages people and is supportive
Negatives -
- LLMs DO judge via generalisation and assumptions
- LLMs without clear roles cause frustration
A quote from Celeste Davis's post titled "Why aren't we talking about the real reason male college enrolment is dropping?" The quote is "For every 1% increase in the proportion of women in the student body, 1.7 fewer men applied. One more woman applying was a greater deterrent than $1000 in extra tuition."
boys, be better this year
