Fundamentally, we see exponential benefits from many buses being improved than just a single bus. Similarly, we see substantially more benefit from a connected network of bike lanes separated from cars that all ages can use than a few miles or blocks here and there that don't connect.
I couldn't rearrange my schedule today to make it to the Council hearing on the streets plan, but reminder that we need both high quality bike and bus lanes AND to have an abundance of them. Every bus should run efficiently and reliably, and safe bike networks work best when they're easy to use.
not like i'm very good or present or whatever at social media to begin with, but
not around here very much bc social media is basically the main thing i can let go of when i'm deeply burnt out.
Because of how difficult it can be to find someone to clear snow, I find it difficult to believe that fines alone is really enough to create an accessible city.
Plus, plenty of other cities with more snow manage clearing sidewalks. We could, too, we just have to dream bigger.
As someone whose household is responsible for clearing, I'm lucky my partner is able to do this readily. We've tried to find a service or someone to do this, even willing to pay a yearly contract whether or not there's snow in case we're out of town, but we haven't been able to find such a service.
It is absolutely plausible that someday, we could use small plows similar to the bike lane plows to clear sidewalks. It would require investment and potentially widening sidewalks, but it would be worth it for a more accessible city. A system based on deterrents doesn't guarantee access.
Christopher Leon Johnson falsely claiming that I'm a paid lobbyist for Transportation Alternatives (which I am not and have never been) while speaking to access issues I've had with snow removal as an individual.
Why do we let the same people slander individuals at City Council hearings with baseless claims constantly?
Thank you to @cmsandynurse.bsky.social for recognizing that clear sidewalks, crosswalks, and bus stops is a public good and should be something the city handles because we can't rely on individuals. I agree that this is the only way we ensure accessible sidewalks for all. Thank you, Council Member.
No one I know, no matter how able they are, has thought these storms have been easy to walk around in.
Generally speaking, everyone in government at this hearing seems to think this property owner piecemeal sidewalk clearing thing is fine, and multiple Council Members have said mostly this has been handled well... do they really not struggle to walk around?
Gale Brewer is really out at the Committee on Disability saying that property owners have "dementia" because they seemingly forget to clear their sidewalks properly. Can't make this up.
Riding the B over the Manhattan Bridge never gets old.
thank you for this excellent tip
The research is clear: Abortion is safe across body size. But BMI limits at some abortion clinics are still pushing some patients into different care and higher costs. This story was originally reported by @19thnews.org, and republished through RNGโs partnership with The 19th News Network.
Congratulations to Chair Sherman! We look forward to working with her to build a fairer and more affordable New York City.
it sure is a choice to look at a political landscape in which the government is actively attempting to erase trans people from existence and publish a Singal victory lap in furtherance of that goal

Are you frustrated with NYC's ability to manage snow removal for pedestrians and people with disabilities?
@council.nyc.gov is hosting an oversight hearing this week.
We're in the 21st Century and we should be better at this.

Sick of how hard it is to get around after it snows? Remember it's so much harder for those with difficulty moving and basically impossible for folks depending on mobility devices.
Speak up or submit written testimony to City Council about how our snow response isn't equitable:
Do NOT literally push people over to get on already packed trains, omfg
More to add to my testimony for this Friday's Council hearing.
And... like clockwork, the magic of the blizzard is over as soon as I have to leave home for a medical appointment and get the treat of falling because of dangerously unshoveled sidewalks.
you love to see it! nyc needs all the affordable housing we can get!
Bus running
Subway running
growing up in the suburbs, a blizzard like this would mean Iโm stranded at home for up to a week until a plow cleared our street
now in NYC, the subway and buses are still running even with two feet of snow on the ground. cities are incredible
Also love the travel ban for allowing a little dog who has never had access to a backyard to run around freely because there were no cars on the roads
