News from Finland. A 9-year-old lost an especially good stick he’d had since he was 2. He hung up 20 posters. A few days later it was returned. It had been found by a 2-year-old, who wanted to keep it for herself, but her mother made her return it. She got toys, flowers and candy as a reward.

Cute drawing of a 'werewolf': In 1642 in the town of Lemgo, Germany, local pharmacist David Welman was accused of witchcraft and being a werewolf. Anonymous hate mail was sent to him, one of which included this sketch.

(The french-toast bagel seemed like an especially appropriate skeet to reply to, given its context!)

I'm reading The Hero of This Book right now (at the recommendation of a British acquaintance I'd asked about place-based, atmospheric novels set in London) & it's just so outstandingly good (my friend's words, first), delightfully digressive, & might finally teach me how to write fiction myself!

I was explaining to my Ukrainian colleague the phrase β€˜There’s no such thing as a free lunch’. She told me the equivalent in Ukrainian is β€˜The only free cheese is in the mousetrap’ - which is so much better

Let's not jump to conclusions. Maybe Ken Paxton boiled a goat in its mother's milk.

Not quite an answer, but someone asked a similar question on r/Scrivener a week ago (though not re academic writing specifically). Overall: no, Scrivener's still the best. There are a few workable alternatives, but not the slightest consensus re which, or if it's even worth trying out others.

In Hong Kong people use the MTR exits for wayfinding & will meet friends at K13 or C5 way more than "on the northeast corner of such-and-such and somethingth." Arguably HK is denser than the Bay (& I bet people would need an educational ad campaign to get in the habit of using exits like this) but..

β€œI Have Lost Everything”: The Toll of Cities’ Homeless Sweeps Cities often take belongings β€” including important documents and irreplaceable mementos β€” when they conduct sweeps of homeless encampments. ProPublica gave notecards to people across the country so…

We asked people who lived in homeless encampments that were cleared out in city β€œsweeps” to write about what object was the hardest for them to lose.

β€œThey took my baby pictures and my moms obituaries,” a 29-year-old in California wrote.

If we want better fashion culture in the US, we have to lower the cost of housing and commercial real estate, support independent craftspeople, build denser neighborhoods, improve walkability, and get rid of overly restrictive zoning laws. Let kook culture thrive.

Best thing about Stanford is you can brag about going to a school so prestigious it has its own private gates to hell. I have a soft spot for quotes-as-emphasis, so my 2nd favorite thing was the parking payment machine that read THIS MACHINE GIVES "NO CHANGE" for years. 3rd fave, I'll have to think

Work skeet, Target fell for a coordinated disinformation campaign this year, and news about it rarely mentions the targeted disinfo or the fact that Americans broadly support LGBTQ+ rights:

Massive, massive win for transgender people out of my birth state of Louisiana.

Louisiana becomes only the 3rd red state to beat back a total gender affirming care ban for trans teens.

Activists there should be truly proud. This was not an easy task.

Louisiana will be an oasis:

I have a hundred helpful suggestions, none of which I've ever been able to implement for long enough to really know what I'm talking about. But as a West Coaster, spending a week or two in an east-of-me time zone is the easiest way.

Using Freedom.to to block prime internet distractions also helps.
