Big day tomorrow. MPs will be discussing (behind closed doors) a draft report on how to best change election rules to throttle a group that points out MPs shouldn't be in charge of their own election rules๐ค

This is really exciting news๐พ
The Supreme court now has the opportunity to weigh in on the question everybodyโs been asking๐๐๐ is it okay to leave election rules (in this case boundary drawing) in the hands of politicians? Or should they be decided by permanent, independent, nonpartisan bodies?

In election after election, 60% (or some majority) don't feel properly represented. And that's the basic problem with FPTP.
The main reason we haven't ditched FPTP is because of The Golden Rule: those with the gold make the rules.

FPTP is funny because your vote has the ability to make a difference in close races like Terrebonne. This can feel cool if you voted for the winner, but doesn't look so great when if you're with the 60% of voters who didn't...and there was mailing ballot clerical errors..

When MPs are in charge of election rules the inevitable result is self-serving legislation.
Tucked away in bill C-4 (federal) is a clause which explicitly exempts political parties from all privacy laws๐....a measure I really doubt any voter would support.

How time flies๐ค Just 6 months ago Pierre Poilievre called us a "scam" and outlined his original ideas for immediate electoral reform (of the anti-long ballot sort) in a letter to the government.

What a rollercoaster of a year.
Huge thank you to all the candidates and supporters who made 2025's longest ballot campaigns possibleโค๏ธโค๏ธโค๏ธ
It's been incredible watching what a ragtag group of amateurs can pull offโ

Alberta increases fee for citizen-led initiatives to $25K to discourage 'frivolous applications'
Alberta has made it harder for individuals to begin a citizen-led initiative by upping the fee to $25k
โThis is a concerning trend from this government where they change the rules and processes when they no longer work in their favour" - Opposition justice critic Irfan Sabir

The lesson is clear. When election rules are in the hands of PMs/Premiers, expect broken promises, empty gestures, and self-serving electoral law.
This arrangement serves whoever's in charge, not voters. ...And the best way we've found to annoy whoever's in charge is to join the longest ballotโค๏ธ

Rob Shaw: Proportional representation wonโt be revived on Ebyโs watch
B.C. premier says three failed votes settled the issue, shuts down calls for another review
"[David Eby] has flatly rejected a proposal from an all-party legislative committee to take another run at changing the provinceโs electoral system. 'No, I have no interest in that,' Eby told me."
