Difficult day for privacy in Canada on the way: government set to reject Senate amendment to Bill C-4 on political party privacy and will introduce a new lawful access bill that is likely to revive constitutionally dubious warrantless access provisions.
โFederal political parties are in the process of exempting themselves, retroactively, from a law that would require them to be governed by the same privacy principles as other organizations.โ

Well that's a relief. ๐
Minutes from yesterdays meeting regarding the "Actions of the Longest Ballot Committee"
MPs are releasing a report, called "Becoming a Candidate in an Election: A Review of the Criteria". Look forward to reading it๐
Have to disagree with Mackinnon on this. MPs should never be in charge of their own election rules...and they are presently demonstrating exactly why
(C-4 amends the Elections Act to exempt political parties from all privacy law)

Today at PROC MPs will be holding a televised discussion on โthe current state of civic resilience in Canadaโ afterwards theyโll have a closed door meeting on how to amend election rules to throttle the LBC, a group that says MPs shouldnโt be in charge of their own election rulesโฆhmmm

This is really exciting news๐พ
The Supreme court now has the opportunity to weigh in on the question everybodyโs been asking๐๐๐ is it okay to leave election rules (in this case boundary drawing) in the hands of politicians? Or should they be decided by permanent, independent, nonpartisan bodies?
In election after election, 60% (or some majority) don't feel properly represented. And that's the basic problem with FPTP.
The main reason we haven't ditched FPTP is because of The Golden Rule: those with the gold make the rules.
FPTP is funny because your vote has the ability to make a difference in close races like Terrebonne. This can feel cool if you voted for the winner, but doesn't look so great when if you're with the 60% of voters who didn't...and there was mailing ballot clerical errors..

When MPs are in charge of election rules the inevitable result is self-serving legislation.
Tucked away in bill C-4 (federal) is a clause which explicitly exempts political parties from all privacy laws๐....a measure I really doubt any voter would support.

Yo anyone seen any long ballots recently
How time flies๐ค Just 6 months ago Pierre Poilievre called us a "scam" and outlined his original ideas for immediate electoral reform (of the anti-long ballot sort) in a letter to the government.
While high-stakes talks between Denmark, Greenland and the US are ongoing at the Whitehouse. Let us take a moment to appreciate some Danish ballots
