Deliberately went early to an event today so that I could sit in one of my favourite woodlands for an hour and drink in the sounds of April. Rewarded with my first Pied Flycatcher and Redstart of the year. #BirdingWales
Coed Ganllwyd, Meirionnydd, a @nationaltrust.org.uk treasure.
Longevity record is now 25 years and 11 days held by a Chough on Anglesey (and also probably the oldest ringed passerine in Europe!). See 2023 ringing report in @birdsinwales.bsky.social report by @lee00barber.bsky.social.
He’s doing well for a Chough - average life expectancy is 7yrs. But he still has away to go to catch up with the longevity record 23yrs 11d (set in 2019) 🤯. Set by a female on the Ceredigion coast (I think?).
Lots more cool info on choughs @btobirds.bsky.social here www.bto.org/understandin...
only probably as he has lost a couple of the original colour rings in 10 years. He has been sighted a couple of times over this period, most recently in 2021 at Rhossili. It’s lovely to know he’s still going.
On the -ve side @bootlegbryos.bsky.social told me today he was only 5 when I ringed him🤯
The colour ringed Red-billed chough in this photo is probably one I ringed as a chick at a site near Mewslade bay on the Gower in 2015.
This photo was taken yesterday at its birth site. And it looks likely that it’s breeding back at this site with an unringed female.
Dotted Beefly (we think?) spotted on the Gower Cliffs yesterday during a Red-billed Chough survey.
Pair of Red-billed Chough over Fall bay Gower.
Adder (snake) curled up in a coil on grass. No head visible as predated by Buzzard.
Few images from the Rhossili stretch.
First few days of surveying for the team along the South Gower Cliffs. Lots to see and even some Chough. First nest site confirmed as well!
