So, yes. But also, why on earth is your self hosted RSS aggregator on the open internet using password auth? Why is an RSS aggregator trying to use a bespoke cryptographic handshake?
Why does every app have to implement authentication in the first place?

Or sure, I donβt think itβs especially overpriced. I just mean that given those specs, itβs not as likely to pull down perception of the brand either.

In fairness to the researchers, the experiments are actually pretty detailed and I donβt think that would pass the tests. Doesnβt feel like weβre far off though.

But more interesting is that Claude Code (the agent+LLM combo) is a lot closer because it has a task list and persistence. And those little stateful bsky bots with long-term memory check off all the boxes that I found in my cursory investigation.

The short version is cogsci people have legitimately done experiments to measure differences between awake humans (conscious) and sleeping/comatose ones (unconscious) and LLMs come up on the unconscious side by those measurements.

With all this talk of consciousness, which is just another word for magic, I thought Iβd look back on my essay about magic (I mean engineering) from 2.5 years ago. Itβs held up pretty well! apenwarr.ca/log/20230415

Yes. Although if one public blog post (or better, a test suite) start to exist for the set of edge cases, the problem of repeatedly re-solving it gets progressively easier.

In an old marketing book I read, thereβs a story about how they used to sell the optimal ketchup, optimal laundry detergent, etc, determined by extensive survey of average preferences. Then they realized that not everyone has average preferences. Software is still in that earlier phase.

Yes. But embedded in that statement is that all the tools people are making needs to be ones people want to use. If anyone can make a useful app for $10 the donβt all need to earn even $100.

Are you thinking of using Aperture itself or just the ideas in its design? Aperture supports the notion of Hooks so volunteers could run their own Aperture instances and send you copies of live conversations (matching certain criteria) as they happen for example.

Hackathons are pretty inspiring, seeing a few young people really dig in to a problem is a cure for cynicism, even for a jaded GenX goat, such as myself.

Ugly webcam shot of dying plants and grow lamps
Reason #152 why I love @tailscale.com:
I set up this "wicking rope" to water my plants while I'm away. But I don't trust it. So I set up an old laptop and wrote a small python server.
Thanks to Tailscale, actually reaching the server is easy and safe.
Now I can watch my plants die while away.
