Apparent Affiliate of Danish Company Helps Russians Export Grain From Occupied Ukraine
Russian companies are shipping pillaged grain out of occupied Ukrainian ports. The apparent affiliate of a major Danish shipping inspection company, Baltic Control, is being paid to assist.
Proud to have worked on this investigation, just shortlisted for @gijn.org's 2026 Sigma Awards.
It details how an affiliate of a Danish company appears to have taken part in Russiaβs pillaging of stolen Ukrainian grain from two occupied ports on the Sea of Azov.

Putinβs not really an βoligarchβ and I didnβt claim he has no assets in the West, I said Iβve never seen any documentation of any. Itβs true his daughters have popped up in Europe and theyβre clearly not poor but I havenβt seen any reports of large assets of theirs abroad. Unless I missed something!

For Putin he is a random American, yes. An obviously unreliable man who has close, frequent associations with high-profile, powerful people is the last person Putin would want controlling his money.

That's disappointing, I was engaging politely and in good faith.
I never claimed anything with confidence; I claimed the opposite β the assets we KNOW about are in Russia, but we don't know what else may or may not be out there.

Now is it plausible Putin has stashed money offshore somewhere, in case of a rainy day? Of course. But I don't think we know about it, and I certainly think it would be run by people he has close access to, not some random dissolute American.

We've also done several investigations of Putin-linked assets and they're always in Russia, centered around Bank Rossiya.

I don't find it plausible at all. I don't think Putin would ever trust his money to an American citizen he can't control. The only documented Putin wealth stories that had any foreign connection were always around Roldugin, and it was offshore vehicles, not really assets "in the West."

The way this is written is incredibly internet-brained. I can't imagine an activist in any other country being profiled like this, with more than half-an-eye to what they post online.

Liberalism and the search for meaning
The worst option except for all the others
There is a subset of people who will be extremely triggered by this specific combination of words, but @mattyglesias.bsky.social has written one of the best essays on the value of liberalism I've ever read.

I've increasingly come to view cynicism as the seedbed of totalitarianism, both because it can paralyze the opposition and because it implicitly validates the might-makes-right ethic of the authoritarian.
