1. multi user backups / whole pds backups is on the roadmap
2. it's there to prevent unauthorized backups, though you can use other tools to do the same thing, so perhaps it should be removed
Also we highly recommend using our app as a template if you're interested in building desktop apps for #atproto. It includes functional OAuth (which was quite hard to perfect!), backup tasks, and modern UI.
also v0.1.4 is out which finally fixes background backups!

the internal backup service actually has support for progress, we just need to add it in the UI which will probably be ready in the next release
