I’ve been giving a few talks to groups of university technical staff, receiving positive reactions to our recommendations for acknowledging technical staff, including with their ORCID numbers in Acknowledgments, and using tenzing.club to facilitate that.

The framing in this article also risks conflating uselessness as an objective & as a retrospective description. Who's writing a grant, or a paper, with the explicit purpose of "creating useless stuff"? Work can be fantastically motivated & important in its own terms- without specifying practicality

Some people are apparently claiming that Silicon Valley Tech Bros have consciousness, like normal humans.
As someone who studies these issues carefully, I can assure you that this is an utterly preposterous claim. Yes, they can mimic humans, but they are fundamentally incapable of original thought.

If you ever want to read a paper for free and can't find it otherwise, email the lead author and politely ask for a copy. You will not be bothering the person. You will in fact make their whole entire day. I have had scientists get so excited I asked they sent me everything they ever published.

I’m aware of “There may be follow-up funding” but … to select just 1 winner for £9m and then give them an exclusive shot at that additional £32m is some winner take all choice.
Especially quick when they expect a consortia to be assembled.
How do those numbers reconcile with the statement "[This is expected to be a highly competitive process] which will make a single award."? Surely call fund total should be £9.4M when that is the maximum individual bid?
