Is there a reason for the oddness of the sub names?
Coincidence or some theme?

Kate Winslett is the only high-profile foreign actor to nail the Aussie accent - in The Dressmaker (which is a fantastic film that deliberately jumps genres every 20 minutes or so) but it was her second go at it. The first was, I think, Hideous Kinky about deprogramming and her accent was... fine

It's revenge for the shitty job Americans do with our accents. I mean it takes a lot to make me feel bad for the British but hearing a Yank riddling their attempts with a barrage of wild glottal stops and a smattering of nine different dialects does it every time.

I'm just re-reading the Hitchhiker's series now and I can't exactly quantify the difference underlying it, but it seems like maybe Pratchett when he really found his niche highlighted absurdity by grounding his stories in realism, while Adams just swung for the fences with anything being fair game?

They’re either going to solemnly herald me on my way to Sto-vo-kor or dismember me and send me there against my will.
It’s like they don’t even care about my physio appointment this afternoon

I feel like there could have been an interesting story about how Commander Shelby gradually got seduced by the efficiency of Borg technology and convinced herself and Starfleet that the benefits outweighed the risks.
But absent that story, it just seemed ridiculous and doomed

A young brush tailed possum and her kid still mostly riding on her back, eating scraps from a birdfeeder on my balcony.
The mother looks mildly stunned by the light but the kid is full on eyeballing me

I’m sure this mum has been visiting me since she was riding on her mother’s back but it’s probably been several more generations than that.
Bloody loud barreling across the roof all night but still appreciate them. When they’re not stripping my plants down to the stalk

Anyone Else Have Those Weird Dreams Where Sobbing Future Generations Beg You To Change Course? The human subconscious is such an interesting thing. No matter how much you think you’ve got it figured out, it’ll always spit out the most random stuff. Take me, for example. After coming home from a...

I'd forgotten the throwaway gag that Zaphod had his extra arm added to help him in his ski-boxing, which I think must have been a nice little jab at the weird combination of sports that resulted in the biathlon being skiing and shooting, somehow.
I'm going to keep reading the rest of the series now

Ours was a revisit of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy which I hadn’t read in more than a decade and almost everyone else had read at some point.
So, it turns out that between everyone knowing the book and the ongoing cavalcade of horrors elsewhere, not much book chat went on

I have tanlines from wearing thongs (on my feet, for the foreigners).
I call them my chevrons of shame, but I'm actually kind of impressed with them

Not just computers either.
Online bots are goatse-ing the Overton Window all over.
Thousands of people who just a few years ago would have known better than to spout some hateful bullshit in the open, are now proudly marching in a herd of nonexistent bigots online.
Not that private bigotry was ok.

There’s a one minute sequence in his season of The Terror that was literally breath-taking.
To avoid spoilers I’ll describe it as a dream sequence and that’s sort of true but also not.

I remember seeing his Dead Dad years ago (as part of a larger exhibition of his) which seemed to be the start of his hyper-realistic works if I recall.
This super precise likeness of a person, shrunken by death, really stuck with me.

I feel like I should preface the quote with something but all I can say is both major parties in Australia are complicit in genocide.
At least there's a protest tomorrow against the Israeli PM's visit, that is itself in response to our supposedly left wing PM inviting him

Didn't know there was a TV version but heard a radio adaptation about 30 years ago and occasionally still hear "You're making her owls when she wants to be flowers" in a Welsh accent, which is somehow extra unnerving in Australia

Yeah, I feel like I'm 900 years old railing about another social contract being abandoned, like people playing videos or music on their phones out loud.
Even when folks try to be a bit coy about it, if you get enough allusions, the negative space basically outlines the twist.
Still a great episode.

But Liam was scared and frequently asked what they had done wrong, where they were and what happened to the little blue knit hat he wore the day he was detained, Conejo said.

There wasn’t much he could say to his son, β€œexcept hug him and tell him everything would be OK,” Conejo said.

Worried about further upsetting his son, Conejo said, he was forced to bite back his own tears.

Liam has since been reunited with his hat and continues to wear it, even inside the house, his dad said Thursday. Asked how he might one day explain to Liam everything that has happened, Conejo said he would tell his son that he had become the face of hope and change.

"He was the global figure who did all this so that the voices of the people demanding freedom would be heard, especially those of the children who are still locked up," Conejo said. β€œI would tell him he was very brave and that I am very proud of him.”

I'm not sure her name is ever said out loud in the movie, but I was delighted to discover watching the credits that Claudia Black's character was named 'Shazza' which is ocker as hell.
