High Times, Flying Once More The stoner magazine stopped publishing in 2024. Now the founder of Raw Rolling Papers is lighting it up again.

For the @newyorker.com's Talk of the Town, I hung out with Josh Kesselman, the founder of Raw Rolling Papers and the new owner of High Times Magazine. (In the interest of clearheaded reporting, I did not partake!)

In 1952, she commissioned Langston Hughes to write an essay for it, though this was never completed — her project came to an abrupt halt as the 1950s Red Scare reached a fever pitch. As Sands explains, she, like many fellow Jewish refugees in the New York City jazz scene (including the founders of Blue Note Records), was an outspoken leftist. Furthermore, jazz was the site of radical integration, as Model’s images of a jubilant, racially mixed 1956 party, for example, demonstrate. Laying out the “racialized dynamics” of McCarthy’s attacks, Sands explains “how deeply McCarthyist red-baiting was intertwined with anti-Black racism” as he persecuted civil rights champions under the guise of fighting Communism.

You preferred human writing. You're either sharply attuned to the qualities that make for great writing, or a lucky guesser. Maybe vou also noticed that human writing often includes some clunky phrases, like this passage from Cormac McCarthy's "Blood Meridian," caused by the author's aversion to punctuation: "As well ask men what they think of stone." A.I. used to make mistakes like these. But today's systems are much more fluid than their predecessors - so fluid, in fact, that finding grammatical errors or nonstandard syntax is often a hint that you're looking at a human's prose, not a machine's.

The idea that Cormac McCarthy's writing style is a *mistake* nearly made me experience an aneurysm.

the truly wild thing is there's no way to know if you're in their little fucked machine. It's a dynamic system that suggests "experts" contextually. there's no list, there's no nothing. so if you don't know you're in it how do you know to opt out?

there's a part in "silver snarling trumpet," written in 1962, where robert hunter says the scene is already over. it's always been over!
