Sophia and her husband Salomon were Orthodox Jewish and had a large family with seven children. At the beginning of the war, already living in poverty, she became pregnant again. Fearing that she would not be able to raise an additional child under the occupation, she attempted to abort the pregnancy. It is unknown if she tried to do this alone or if she had help from a family member. Sophia is very religious and is not taking this step lightly but she foresaw a dire future with the Nazis and felt forced to take this action, As a result she died on Monday 30 December. On 13 April 1943 Solomon and his children are put on the 7th transport to #Sobibor where, after a grueling 3 days in cattle-trains, they are all murdered on arrival together with 1196 other men, women and children. Sobibor was an extermination camp, the only prisoners who lived there at any given time were the roughly 600 slave laborers forced to assist in the operation of the camp. While survivors of Auschwitz use the term "selected" to mean being selected for murder, at Sobibor being "selected" meant being selected to live, at least temporarily. Approximately 250,000 Jews were murdered at Sobibor. The precise death toll is unknown, since no complete record survives. Photo: Jewish boys orphanage in Amsterdam, 1938.
December 30, 1940: Sophia Pront-Wagenaar dies at home in Amsterdam. Her husband and 7 children are put on the 7th transport to #Sobibor where, after 3 days in cattle-trains, they are murdered together with 1196 other men, women and children.
