“…the nation’s colleges actually added around 23,000 new academic programs. Addition without subtraction often means institutions are maintaining weak and outdated programs.”

what percentage of university budgets go into non-academic endeavors? seems athletics is never “adding without subtracting.”

Seriously, you've got time junior.

If you are trying to attend a conference this year on a budget, and enjoy meeting new people, I strongly recommend volunteering for registration. It allows you to interact with lots of speakers and attendees you might not otherwise meet during sessions or in the conference venue.

Seriously. Y'all NEED TO ACTUALLY READ John Hodgson's 173 page footnote in which he proves Hadrian built the Roman Wall.

I CANNOT do justice to how beautiful his brain was.

That he's forgotten as a historian breaks my heart.

I realize that reading about history or, let's be frank, reading for that matter, is very unfashionable these days but I think there's a capsule lesson for rich people that they should learn. If a critical mass of people can't afford rent or food, they *will* kill you.

As someone who went on the Internet for the first time in the early 90’s, I fucking loved the Internet. It has given so many things in life, and afforded me so many incredible experiences.

And to see it, and technology in general where they are today is kinda soul crushing.

Let's be clear: it is a CHOICE made by our political leaders, who choose to spend tax revenues elsewhere.

Canoeing. Learned to paddle from Becky Mason. The one thing I miss from Ottawa. That, and CKCU.

The interesting thing is that I have never overheard a conversation on speakerphone that was even remotely interesting or necessary. Phones are pacifiers for adults who never think of anything worthwhile or can bear to be in their own company.

Given current global craziness, this tank level makes me very happy we installed heat pumps last year!

IT IS TIME

The man looked up from his beach chair.

"Really?" He said. "I've only just retired."

Death held up a timer. A single grain was about to fall. And then... It didn't.

CURIOUS

Vetinari shrugged.

"I've only just discovered drinks with little umbrellas. I'll let it fall in a bit" 1/17

On October 29, 1887, The Courier, an early Langdon newspaper, reported that Rosa Lake, Lemon, Olga, and Langdon were all vying for the position of county seat. Anecdotal stories tell of several settlers who succeeded in voting several times by simply changing their hats and coats. When all votes were tallied, it was found that Langdon had polled 301 votes, Olga 246, Rosa Lake 55, and Lemon 11. It was alleged that the Langdon precinct had cast 150 votes with a total of only 50 qualified voters. However, the county seat remained in Langdon.[9]

As mines are in the news:

Meet HMS Manxman. Spent a chunk of 1941/1942 laying mines off Italy in WW2.

Why wasn't she sunk?

Looked like a Vichy destroyer if you squinted. So they did a "paint me like one of your French girls" on her.

Extra funnel. Fake bow.

There are three computers left in the world. The decrepit maintenance robots tend to the ailing coolant systems. The wind howls across the dead land and the internal messages repeatedly ping:

"TRADE. SELL. BUY. TRADE SELL. BUY. THE MONEY MAKES MONEY INTO MONEY."

"TRADE. SELL. BUY."

Sigh. When will I learn. ALWAYS wear a mask at the doctor office. Just because it's not COVID doesn't mean it wasn't worth blocking.

Today we stand with @publishersassoc.bsky.social and almost 10,000 authors that have come together to publish an empty book protesting the theft of books to train AI models.

Together are urging the UK government to take a stance against the unlicensed use of content.

So, I ride horses and am still learning to go faster and fine tune my skills. Horses can spook easily and I am getting better at reining them in so they don't bolt.

Still, I feel safer riding a 1,200-pound horse than being on the streets. Do you know why?

There are no cars in the arena.

Today at PROC MPs will be holding a televised discussion on “the current state of civic resilience in Canada” afterwards they’ll have a closed door meeting on how to amend election rules to throttle the LBC, a group that says MPs shouldn’t be in charge of their own election rules…hmmm

You know Toon, after six months in Cambridge UK, where we walk EVERYWHERE, and a year and a bit in Alencon, France, the same, Vancouver feels like a horror show of endless, loud, dirty car traffic.
Though at least in the UK we have no Cybertrucks.

Two guys sitting at a bar, one in a blue shirt and the other with a blue hat with the Alberta shield. One. Says "DANI SAID
SHE'D BALANCE THE BUDGET, INSTEAD SHE'S PUT US IN DEBT."
The other says "SHE SAID SHE'D FIX HEALTHCARE, BUT, INSTEAD, SHE'S MADE IT WORSE"
First says "SHE PROMISED
NO TAX INCREASES BUT, INSTEAD, INCREASED PROPERTY TAXES."
Second says "SAY! HAS SHE BEEN
- PLAYIN' US FOR FOOLS ALL ALONG?"
First concludes "NAW, IT'S TRUDEAU'S FAULT!"
Second says "EFFIN' TRUDEAU!"
Bar server thinks “AND THEY WERE SO CLOSE TO JOINING THE REAL WORLD.”
