I was already operating with a VPN but I guess it will now be necessary to navigate the Internet with one.

It's so disappointing to see yet another way in which online platforms will become less accessible for everyone, while still failing to help young people in any meaningful way.

Beyond the obvious cyber security concerns, I feel like we have taken away agency from individuals (including parents and guardians) without doing anything to address the root of the problem, such as the presence of unethical, illegal, dangerous or extreme NSFW material online.

From a personal standpoint, growing up queer in a conservative environment, having access to information about sex (e.g., through Wikipedia) and even 18+ material (e.g., erotica) was crucial for me to explore and come to terms with my sexuality.

I, like many others, share the worry about the ubiquitous nature of pornography and its potentially harmful impact on young people.

This is a cultural problem too big to be fixed by a digital plaster like the Online Safety Act.

So the Internet becomes less safe for minors, who can access NSFW material by using VPNs, circumventing age confirmation in other ways, or using dodgier websites that do not care.

At the same time, the Internet becomes hostile towards smaller communities who cannot afford to comply.

I hope the failures caused by this will deter it from spreading to the EU.

I don't see how there will be any real pushback, as any criticism will be labelled as "not caring about children's safety."

Not a particularly horny thought, but grappling with the introduction of the Online Safety Act in the UK.

This is such a reckless way to implement this important piece of legislation that fundamentally changes how we can interact online.
