Payouts for PSERS Aksia is the lone consultant still fighting a pension client lawsuit that Hamilton Lane Advisors, Portfolio Advisors, and now Aon have paid a combined $30m+ to settle, according to court records. The lawsuit alleges that the four firms, as investment advisors and consultants, recommended unsuitably expensive investments to the $81.4B Pennsylvania Public School Employees Retirement System (PSERS). Suburban middle-school teacher Kevin Steinke originally filed the suit in Pennsylvania state court in June 2021, alleging that PSERS paid its expert advisors millions of dollars for woeful returns — while also paying “exorbitant” fees to private investment managers. Aksia, Aon, Hamilton Lane, and Portfolio Advisors all denied the allegations, but three out of the four have now settled. Last fall, Hamilton Lane agreed to pay $4m and Portfolio Advisors $11.25m in a joint settlement approved last fall, according to court documents. Aon is the latest to relent, striking a $15m payout deal, per new court docs. This is on top of $7m Aon paid its grumpy customer in 2024 over errors in a 2020 risk share analysis.
With Pennsylvania-based Hamilton Lane dropped from the suit, Aksia and Aon filed last December to move the case to federal court, albeit still in Philly. The teacher’s lawyers asked that the case be sent back to state court, contending in a January filing that Aksia and Aon missed a 30-day window for making the matter federal. Aksia and Aon have since opposed that request, arguing that the 30-day window began later than the teacher’s attorneys claim and that they were well within it. PSERS’ most recent annual report, for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2025, lists Aksia as a private markets consultant and Portfolio Advisors as a private equity fund manager. The report doesn’t refer to Aon or Hamilton Lane. Portfolio Advisors was acquired by FS Investments in 2023, and last year they rebranded together as Future Standard. Representatives for all parties involved didn’t immediately respond to The Allocator’s requests for comment. —Marc Hogan
