Wait, is that wrong? Like I know it *can* be spelled without the ”u”, but if you asked me to do it today, that’s how I’d spell it.

I think I’d read essays either summarizing or structured around the arguments of How to Suppress at least 3 times before I finally just got the book. Still very worth reading.

After following the Orcs up the tunnel nearly to their fortress, Sam is amazed to overhear an Orc explain that Frodo is still alive! The Orcs close the fortress door before Sam can reach it. Locked outside in the dark tunnel, he takes off the Ring and collapses from exhaustion.

Narratively having Ever Given getting stuck in 2021 to set up Hormuz in 2026 is great foreshadowing. You want your audience to understand the basics of international shipping in a lower stakes context so you drop the real plot without a lot of saggy exposition about the minutiae of cargo logistics.

Periodic reminder from your least favorite English teacher to take it easy on the future tense statements! Doom is conditional, and modifiers like "I'm worried that" or "It would suck if" or "If X doesn't do Y" were invented for times like these.

At this point it's barely even a boycott, I've just stopped thinking of Target as a place to buy the things I used to buy at Target.

We’re taking on a yarn shop in the neighboring town. If you come to Midcoast Maine this year, make sure you stop by! (fortunately the planning for this was not “it will materially contribute to the household finances in the early years”)

The sucky thing about being 1 of 2 is that both towns have to decide to do it, which is why the feasibility study a few years ago didn’t recommend trying.

We spent 8 years being in the smaller town of a two-town consolidated school district in NH and the stories I heard about the gap between the schools we had and the schools that almost-were were really enraging.

I worked on software for insurance agencies & brokerages, which included a sophisticated user giving me an overview of Lloyds of London syndicates for some of their complex insurance products, and I would not recommend trying to understand how the market operates unless you really need to.

"Another reality is that the insurance safety net doesn’t address the core reason ships aren’t sailing, according to shipowners and insurance brokers."

"'It’s more about the safety of the crews rather than taking on insurance for damages.'"

Confused looks from Trump admin on "safety of the crews."

The fate of fossil fuel systems in the “mid-transition” — Volts If the world takes its climate targets seriously, the coming decades will see fossil fuel systems shrinking as clean energy systems grow. In this episode, I talk with associate professor Emily Grubert...

Anyway the climate transition is a huge collective action problem that we should probably address with planning and intention. Getting solar available to more people is good and lots of other things will be too. overcast.fm/+AAoT_mGtLDY

What’s the deal with balcony solar? — Volts Will cheap, DIY solar reach American renters? In Germany, millions of people plug solar panels directly into wall outlets like any other appliance, but in the US, red tape makes it ludicrously costly....

Solar Market Insight Report 2025 Year in Review – SEIA The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) is leading the transformation to a clean energy economy. Learn more at seia.org

"Solar accounted for 54% of all new electricity-generating capacity added to the US grid in 2025. Combined, solar and storage made up 79% of new capacity in this timeframe."

Again, solar panels everywhere good, but this seems more like a way to let a new class of retailers access a market of relatively well off consumers than something that’ll actually meaningfully address climate change or electric cost spikes. I hope I’m wrong.

If one or two panels makes a meaningful contribution to offsetting your power usage, your stove and heating/cooling are running on fossil fuels. Want to spend some money on reducing your climate impact, there you go.

I don’t think there’s a lot of people struggling to make their monthly budgets work who say “yay! I can do a big expense that’ll pay off in 3 years”. And the “well the more solar we use the less we use other stuff to power the grid” doesn’t scale.

Balcony solar is taking state legislatures by storm In more than half of U.S. states, Republican and Democratic lawmakers have introduced legislation that would boost adoption of DIY solar systems.

Sorry, here’s the link. And yes this is good and also I’m not sure if we’d have used it before we had a roof of our own. (And we had balconies! But not usually ideally positioned) www.canarymedia.com/articles/sol...

I think we should put solar panels on everything and also I listened to at least one podcast specifically about this and I’m still trying to figure out why “I can spend about $1,000 to generate electrical savings that’ll net out in 3-4 years” is so exciting. buff.ly/5B79fOA
