"The work has been turning out badly for me this morning & I am sick at heart & oh my God how I do hate species & varieties."
Bonus, adding in a new Darwin canon hater moment for fellow ecologists and nature folks:

Everyone will say the Brother laser printer, and Iβd add you have to be careful and get one with a duplexer, which not all of their models have. I got an Epson ink tank printer because I do like printing in color, and its ink was even cheaper than toner.

I remember hearing William Noel give a talk on the scanning project in 2007 or so, and learning that the book basically was in fine condition until the 1950s when someone used Elmerβs glue on it.

I don't know what counts as affordable for you, but I do know that this is a great time to get old fancy DSLRs from the 2010s (like a Canon 6D or Nikon D600) on ebay for less than $500, and a shiny new Tokina autofocusing macro lens for about $600. Macro has never been more affordable-ish than now!

(That particular zoologist left Transylvania for Heidelberg in 1913 to study, got his Venia in 1919 and as far as I can tell never went back "home". He probably either became a Nazi or was at least pretty antisemitic. The Soviets later installed him as head of the zoology institute in Rostock.)

I first learned about the SiebenbΓΌrger Sachsen while writing about an obscure zoologist and became completely fascinated by that history. I work in grants. Hereβs my advice for the current situation:
1. Network. Lots of new opps are big pots of $ for collaborative, interdisciplinary teams/industry partnerships.
2. Make use of institutional resources. Many unis have grant development professionals that can help you write proposals.

The Sword of Chang
TAMPA, Fla. -- It's far from the newsiest piece of Marco Rubio's New York Times interview, but heck, it interested me.
p.s. I am not knowledgable about Cold War politics or Bush family jokes, this was from 5 minutes of searching "unleash Chiang" in Google Books, etc. 2 more minutes would have turned up @daveweigel.bsky.social 's 2012 investigation web.archive.org/web/20210114... or Maureen Dowd's missive from 2001.

Marco Rubio Wonβt Be V.P. (Published 2012)
β¦a joke which Rubio also misunderstood, saying in 2012, βChang is a mythical conservative warrior. From time to time, if thereβs a big issue going on, youβd see Jeb say, I'm going to unleash Chang. He gave me the sword of Chang.β¦I think it's a Jeb Bush creation.β www.nytimes.com/2012/01/29/m... 4/4

The Myth of Jebβs ProtΓ©gΓ©
If you believe their stories, Bush was a mentor to Rubio. The truth is more complicated.
β¦a joke which Jeb Bush either misunderstood or failed to pass on. When Marco Rubio became speaker of the Florida House in 2005, JB gave MR a golden sword with βCHIANGβ engraved on it, saying βIβm going to bestow to you the sword of a great conservative warrior.β www.politico.com/magazine/sto... 3/4

The Best of Plimpton
George Plimpton is best known for taking to the arenas of professional sports and surviving to write about his experience - with grace, urbanity, and considerable good humor. But such classics as Pape...
The idea was to arm Chiang Kai Shek so he could overthrow the CCP. Ridiculous, and "unleash Chiang" became a joke in various levels of the US government, including George H.W. Bush, who started to use it jokingly to goad his tennis partners to play harder: www.google.com/books/editio... 2/4

So I love researching a good mantra or catchphrase, and βunleash Chiangβ is right in my wheelhouse. It turns out βunleash Chiangβ is something the anti-communist China Lobby and John Birchers would say in the 1950s after the US βlost Chinaβ in their narrative: www.google.com/books/editio... 1/4

I'm fascinated by Chinese university cafeterias. BLCU's had 3 tiers: ground floor to get color-coded plates of dozens of different and interesting dishes cooked at scale, 3rd floor with privately operated εΏ«ι€ stalls, and 2nd floor with slop ladled onto metal trays.
