Later in pregnancy before delivery, there is a softening of the cervix in response to the increasing uterine contractions.

A close up of the mucus plug in the cervix. The mucus plug is formed in early pregnancy from secretions of cervical glands and has a thick, gelatinous consistency. Within this thick, sticky fluid are antibodies that can protect the growing fetus from many bacteria, viruses and other pathogens.

πThe Cervix and Mucus Plug π
The enlarged mucus glands of the cervix during pregnancy secretes a mucus plug called βoperculumβ, act as a seal for the uterus and protect it from ascending infection, and act as a barrier between the vagina and cervix.

π‘ The placenta begins to form after the embryo implants in the uterus
π‘ Each placenta is unique
π‘ Twins may or may not share a placenta
π‘ The placenta is a temporary organ
Add more incredible facts about the placenta below! π
π‘The placenta is multifunctional as it is able to supply oxygen to the fetus and removes carbon dioxide and waste
π‘It is a gland - secreting essential hormones to support pregnancy (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG), Estrogen and Progesterone.
Some Placenta Facts ~
π‘Some people eat their placenta, this is called placentaphagy
π‘The placenta is made my both parental genes.
π‘ Both parent and baby blood passes through the placenta but do not mix
Hence, the placenta is often accorded ritual burial, for in some beliefs the soul must be reunited with its placenta before being able to pass through to the afterlife. (Burton and Fowden, 2015)
This dependency is reflected in the way that various societal groups consider the placenta as a twin or guardian angel, and venerate it as a sacred object.

For the nine months of its intrauterine existence, the human fetus is totally reliant on the placenta, a transient extracorporeal organ that interfaces with the mother, to sustain and protect it.

Thank you so much for all the time messages and support you give Student Midwife Studygram. I see every one of your messages and it means the world to me β€οΈ
We have been able to provide illustrations for Hypnobirthing Books, Midwifery Textbooks and NHS services, as well as donating midwifery related posters, products and money to help charities such as MEDAIR and many more, all this because of your love and support.
My mum works tirelessly packing your lovely orders and our knowledge of shipping has expanded vastly!
Student Midwife Studygram started its own Instagram account as a way of storing all the illustrations I would produce and it was a way of others seeing them if they found them helpful! Today it is very much a family affair with every member of my family having contributed in some way.
I didnβt find the academic side of Uni easy and thatβs when Student Midwife Studygram was born. I found such joy in drawing all my notes and for what is not an easy degree I found it a very therapeutic activity which got me through, before qualifying in 2020 at the age of 31!
Everything went on hold for a while whilst we figured out being new parents as well as fighting the awful disease that is cancer. Time went by and the big βCβ shrunk. My little boy started nursery and at the same time I then started my Midwifery degree at the University of Surrey in 2017.
The year went by and I handed in my final project in early labour with my son Noah. After that I took a year out to be with Noah and unknowingly would end up also caring for my husband when he was diagnosed with large cell Lymphoma.
I started my Midwifery journey in September 2014 when I started an access course at my local college. It was βAccess for Health and Social Careβ and I loved it. I was 26 at the time and newly married and had just found out I was pregnant.
