Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again.

The speed with which salmon have returned to the Klamath - like the Elwha - after dam removal is overwhelmingly hopeful. And in both cases thanks to decades of tireless advocacy by local Tribes.

Furloughed feds pick up Seattle beach trash to keep serving the public Furloughed federal employees were out in the rain picking up cigarette butts, bottle caps, and other trash at Seattle’s Golden Gardens Park on Friday.

Here in Seattle, furloughed NOAA employees were out in the pouring rain cleaning up beaches yesterday, part of a national week of service organized by federal workers who can't do their jobs due to the shutdown.

Story by @heyjohnryan.bsky.social at KUOW, our federally defunded public radio station.

RFK Jr didn't just run an anti-vax campaign in Samoa that killed 83 people, mostly children < age 5β€”he *wanted* people to get measles to see what would happen.

We already know what happens. People get sick & die.

Ex-farm worker here.

We need to talk about this whole "But a living wage for farm workers would spike the cost of food!" thing.

Not true AT ALL.

Y'all don't understand how fast experienced farm workers are.

The average tomato picker pulls 650lbs per hour.

At $20/hr, that's $0.03/lb for labor.

Universities in Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union thought giving in to government demands would save their independence Before the Nazis, German universities were among the best in the world. Step by step, the universities gave up their independence until they were instruments of the state.

Still prescient and, today, even more felicitous than when it was written back in April.

My favorite book is The Sun Also Rises. It’s about a generation of broken people trying (and mostly not succeeding) to cope with their trauma. I ate at a restaurant in Paris from the book.

This is just a friendly reminder that we live in hell but it’s worth it to keep trying.

As we get ready to celebrate #FathersDay, let's think of the farm worker fathers who works so hard to bring food to our tables. Many are currently living in fear due to raids by immigration enforcement. #WeFeedYou

β€˜Half the tree of life’: ecologists’ horror as nature reserves are emptied of insects A new point in history has been reached, entomologists say, as climate-led species’ collapse moves up the food chain even in supposedly protected regions free of pesticides

I've studied insects for 40 years and seen this unfold.

β€œAcross the entire clock of the forest, plants and creatures are falling out of sync. In the background, the temperature is rising.
Even a brief drought lasting just a few days can wipe out millions of humidity-dependent insects."

Scientists have been studying remote work for four years and have reached a very clear conclusion: "Working from home makes us happier." An Australian study, conducted over four years and starting before the pandemic, has come up with some enlightening conclusions about the impact of working from home. The researchers are unequivocal: ...

Study begun pre-COVID finds remote work increased sleep by 1/2 hr/night, decreased commute by 4.5 hr/week replaced with work, family & leisure and led to healthier eating. Remote and hybrid employees report higher job satisfaction and well-being. farmingdale-observer.com/2025/05/16/s...

The U.S. is on track to have the worst whooping cough outbreak since 1948. Some regions are reporting that they are struggling to do contact tracing of cases because they are ALSO managing measles investigations.

And, of course, funding cuts to public health have resulted in fewer resources.
