getting your kids into doom wads or unreal mods or brutalist quake is probably cheaper & builds character & probably avoids that one peanut vtuber who was streaming himself trying to get children to join ICE

Anna is right. I’m fairly certain that home security systems have killed more women than they saved. Abusers are much more likely to use them to escalate violence than police are to intervene.

Home security systems are safety theater. They make us feel like we’re in control, but they don’t actually reduce the risk of violence.

If anything, they’re a part of a broader, predatory industry that exploits our fears and *increases* the risk of violence to keep us spending money.

On the Wrong Side: How Universities Protect Perpetrators and Betray Survivors of Sexual Violence How Universities Protect Perpetrators and Betray Survivors of Sexual Violence

I wrote a book that gets into these dynamics in sexual assault cases. See the chapter called “Never Enough Evidence.”

I have interviewed countless stalking victims. If the police didn’t act on a victim’s word, then a video of what happened won’t convince them either.

It’s very easy for someone to contort evidence of stalking into evidence nothing happened if their goal was to minimize the violence all along.

After revelations that companies like Ring have been selling home security footage to ICE, the most common defense of keeping a camera up seems to be, “But what if I’m stalked?”

And as a violence researcher, I’m just here to state for the record that police do not care about your security footage.

in case you're wondering how strict marathon's anticheat (BattlEye) is, when i accidentally clicked on the discord link in the game it blocked LibreWolf, my default browser, from loading

Million Depth on Steam Craft original weapons and engage in strategic time-freezing battles as you dive into the million-floor deep underground world of this deep-diving action strategy game.

An additional shoutout then to Million Depth, which uses the multi-run format to tell a branching time travel story, and mechanically it's just WILD.

Time-moves-when-you-do bump combat where you control your protagonist and a tag-team of floating, block-built combat drones all simultaneously.

This game deserves more time in the spotlight. One of the weirdest, most experimental things in the roguelike design sphere.

There's a lot of games out there that just stick with tried-and-tested formulas with a minor twist. We should spotlight the creative stuff.

slow start but well worth pushing through because once it gets going it's a truly great resource tension challenge
and if you're put off by some of the more intense aspects in the anime/manga the game skips over a lot of that (the mode that adapts the anime is basically just an extended tutorial)

ultimately there is no real appetite in the ecosystem for particularly serious critique of even moderately visible indies. what people want is to hear about all the cool games coming out with breathless enthusiasm so they can ignore all of them and play slay the spire two instead.

So, "Schrödinger no neko" isn't up your alley? How about a fully 3D JRPG about an amnesiac siren? This is "Shinkai densetsu Meremanoid". Already hacked the thing, got a half-width font, script dumped, the whole kit and caboodle.

Ping me if you know Japanese and want to translate it!

In WarioWare: Twisted, Jimmy's boss microgame can be won instantly if the console is tilted 720° in less than half a second. In practice, this is achieved by literally physically throwing the console.

Every time it comes up I just gotta remind people that it's extremely expensive to license filming in Shibuya, which the team making this game couldn't afford, so they filmed this game by stealing shots and running from the cops.

cannot stress enough that "separate the art from the artist" was meant for private individuals reconciling the art they love with its flawed creators and not meant for the ceo of a company driving a dump truck of money up to a bigot's front porch

first person shooters are extremely fun, but the industry rarely makes the ones i like anymore There’s something about that anticipation as your dropship passes over open ocean and the fighting on the beach comes into view…

you should at least understand what it is that you want more of. go read this before embarrassing yourself trying to say marathon 2026 would be easy to adapt to a singleplayer campaign docseuss.medium.com/first-person...

beyond citadel made me who i am today (a freak)

There's a lot of high-minded talk about how the game's goal is be bullied and abused until it's your turn to bully and abuse people, and... no. It's a twitchy team FPS.

You run around and shoot other guys and the stakes are *slightly* higher if you've found good gear, but it only slows progression

09.03.2026 18:43 👍 75 🔁 2 💬 5 📌 1

I'm not a particular fan or avid player of extraction shooters, but it's funny seeing some of the people talking about Marathon like its very existence is psychological abuse.

It's team deathmatch with some extra steps. And not that many extra steps either, as you can roll into a map with free gear

i'm really hoping sprawl zero heralds a comeback for the seventh gen memorable level design-heavy type of game but even if it doesn't we already got Trepang2 and ADACA's campaign mode out of that movement

09.03.2026 19:00 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0

and no one talking about marathon 2026 is brave enough for this one but if you want a new marathon-type game beyond citadel is right there. there's not much compared to doomquakes but they do exist

09.03.2026 18:57 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 2 📌 0

i know the marathon trilogy looks superficially like doom clones but the point stands that if you want to wander levels designed for one player and have memorable shootouts and read lore documents and participate in Story Things they are right there in the same universe

09.03.2026 18:57 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0

also i bet none of them have played the original marathon. that article on Aftermath makes mention of halo and destiny 2 and not once brings up the actual whole-ass trilogy of singleplayer marathon games that are free on steam right now

09.03.2026 18:53 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0

i think the people crying "i wish marathon was singleplayer" are all missing the point that they're mostly just exhausted that there hasn't been a real seventh-gen-esque singleplayer first-person shooter since Titanfall 2 and they're taking it out on the hot new Bungie thing

we live in an international world now. i know tons of ppl who coordinate w/ coworkers in opposite timezones worldwide now. theres far less reason for absolutely EVERYONE to slavishly adhere to the 9-5 these days
we need to do away with it as a default
let everyone be up when its natural for them

09.03.2026 18:35 👍 1 🔁 1 💬 1 📌 0

every fucking study goes 'night owls get less sleep so arent as healthy, heres how they can sleep earlier'
the fact that they are forced to get up at the same time as early sleepers is NEVER MENTIONED, LIKE AN IMMUTABLE FACT OF NATURE
the problem is the THE FUCKING 9 to 5, NOT NIGHT OWLS EXISTING

ive called it the 'tyranny of morning people' before & im ABSOLUTELY NOT JOKING
but its really a tyranny of capitalism. one of the millions of ways capitalism molds society to be harmful to most humans but makes them more money
i harm myself every time i have to morning person
fuck it and fuck them
