A photo of the cover art for the KUOW and NPR podcast SOUNDSIDE with the word split in two with a rainbow of colors in between it against an artistically faded blue backdrop.
Went on KUOWβs Soundside to talk Oscars before this nightmarishly long awards season finally ends. Will SINNERS beat ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER? Can great locally-tied gems like TRAIN DREAMS & THE SINGERS get any love? What's the one movie you must watch before Sunday? π½οΈ

THE OPTIMIST (2023) is yet another standard true life story of survival and empathy. However, the familiarity is balanced by strong performances from Stephen Lang and Elsie Fisher. My review.

On Jenny Agutter's first, rather extraordinary leading role in David Greene's 1970 folk horror/serial killer thriller I Start Counting, a film I'd been meaning to see for years. Happy to say it lived up to my expectations; less happy that it's now out of print in the US. @seattlecritics.bsky.social
MILE END KICKS, the great second feature from director Chandler Levack starring Barbie Ferreira, just dropped its first trailer (youtu.be/nD8D89N_89I?...) and is coming out April 17. Best read my rave review below from back at TIFF to get ready for this coming-of-age classic for a new generation π½οΈ
Pixar's HOPPERS hits theaters, reminding of some of the great Pixar films of the past. A little too frenetic at times, there are still memorable lines, great characters, and a moment that caused our entire theater to gasp in disbelief.
Go be entertained and have fun.

π½οΈ THE BRIDE! was engrossing, unnerving and surprising β Morgen says that Maggie Gyllenhaal has created something incredibly impressive with her imaginative take on the Frankenstein myth. Starring Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley, it's in theaters now.
HOPPERS is delightfully unhinged in the best way β hilariously chaotic but somehow emotionally grounding too. It completely entranced me from start to finish. Just trust it. #SFCS #Hoppers

Missteps aside, it builds to a really fantastic finale. While neither Tommy nor the film itself was ever likely to be immortal, the closing frames prove to be a fitting sendoff for him as well as his long, sad saga. The movie shines whenever he & Murphy burn bright π½οΈ

Easily Pixarβs best movie since TURNING RED, the delightfully anarchic #Hoppers is also one of the studioβs funniest flights of irreverent fancy that theyβve ever released. Loved. β€οΈ

Messy. Angry. Wild. Peculiar. Frenetic. Exhilarating. Awesome.
Maggie Gyllenhaal resurrects a legend with ferociously fearless enthusiasm. It doesnβt all work and I could care less. Loved every go-for-broke second.
Jessie Buckley is phenomenal.

THE BRIDE! (2026) is bombastic in style and thoughtful in its themes. Writer/director Maggie Gyllenhaal swings for the fences, and while the result maybe imperfect, we can't deny the ambition on display. My review.

Cillian Murphy stares into a lamp with a haunted expression on his face in a still from PEAKY BLINDERS: THE IMMORTAL MAN. Still via Netflix.
PEAKY BLINDERS: THE IMMORTAL MAN: Cillian Murphy captivates in this entertaining enough EL CAMINO-esque Netflix movie. Though often a bit clunky, it's great just to see Murphy light up the screen as Tommy Shelby for what may be the last time π½οΈ

Aidan Zamiriβs THE MOMENT, the mockumentary but also not a mockumentary, about Charli XCX, music, & fame, is now available on VOD. Despite the return of original screenwriter Kevin Williamson and star Neve Campbell, SCREAM 7 (2026) ends up being a low point for the long running franchise. My review.
