It comforts me not at all that these are generally the same people who scream about meritocracy.

It would be nice if people remembered this piece of wisdom from the greatest economics tweet in history (and the one I am most insanely jealous of not having written, especially because it was a reply to me).
...and coming up with the most ridiculous solutions for your problems.
A 3 colour risograph print using blue, yellow and fluorescent pink ink featuring a raccoon. It is walking across some grass covered in flowers, dragging a grocery back which is spilling out food. We see the words TORONTO in bright yellow letters above the critter.
Quick little 3 colour risograph I printed today - I will be hiding these around a park in Toronto tomorrow for Art & Found Day!
One can understand why the Trump administration likes these guys so much.
Aaron Gunn: If the federal government truly believes in the private property rights of Canadians, they should probably stop opening every public meeting by proclaiming the gathering on the โunceded territoryโ of this or that First Nation. Doing so reinforces the radical and dangerous legal concept that most Canadians live on โstolen landโ. This is Canada. One country. For all Canadians.

He is completely harmless, though momentarily unsettled by the alarming possibility that someone might acknowledge the land before a meeting. Yesterday on social media, the MP appeared to crash out and demand to speak to the manager of land acknowledgements, a position that observers confirm does not exist. Chiefs whose territories make up the riding had two words for the MP - Chillax, Bud. Land acknowledgements have never seized private property, cancelled a mortgage, repossessed a pickup truck, or altered a single title deed anywhere in Canada. They are simply people recognizing the history of the place where they are standing. No one is going anywhere. Canada will survive the brief moment of honesty. Until then, Chiefs across the region continue to reassure the public that land acknowledgements have not, to date, resulted in any land back. We share a new article, forthcoming in Public Opinion Quarterly, titled: Not Your Mamaโs Ideology (But Close) Modest Generational Differences in Ideological Alignment in Post-Communist Europe. The picture shows its title page on OSF.
๐Excited to share our forthcoming paper in POQ! And donโt worryโitโs not all about our mums ๐. With @lenkahrbkova.bsky.social and @matejjung.bsky.social, we ask: did younger generations in post-communist Europe develop more conventional leftโright belief systems?
Tl;dr: not really. (๐งต)

Mark Carney flip flops again and finally states "Canada will never participate in Iran offensive"
Vocal and sustained outrage works
I recall this narrative from my days working with an international org. American leadership often treated the idea that the Canadian affiliate was an independent entity that could make it own decisions as a cute joke. Trump is the manifestation of that attitude writ large. It didn't start with him.
Trump just called PM Carney the โfuture Governor of Canadaโ again. Not a slip. Not a joke.
A pattern and it infuriates me!
The 51st state rhetoric isnโt going away. ๐จ๐ฆ

This is not what the article is about, but it reminded me that I used to find Grammarly helpful. Now, in addition to being ethically questionable, it's become annoying.
Political polarization is indeed less severe in Canada. Although I've seen research suggest that people believe that Canadians who share their party affiliation are more 'polarized' than they are. It also seems to me that 'centrist' is a much less damaging label here.

Oh, mood - I still remember getting stuck over on the Island the year of the big snow ('96, I think?). I was a kid, so I thought it was awesome. The adults... didn't agree.

"A Canadian sergeant convicted of assaulting his former spouse three times has been handed a conditional discharge..."
One wonders whether the analysis would have been different had he repeatedly attacked, say, police officers rather than his then-wife.

It always neat to remember that people are, in important ways, just like us - regardless of the era they lived in.
While there is some nuance around disability discourse causing vulnerable people to feel that they're a burden, stories of the second type Picard mentions leave me incensed at the idea that family members could (and, according to some, should) intervene in decisions made by competent adults.
I've been coping with The Horrors(tm) by watching C-dramas. (The cheesier the better - if someone doesn't dramatically spit blood due to having a feeling, I'm not interested.)
