nor am I convinced that teaching this would actually be helping them. In fact, I see AI as a detriment to the students. We're only at the early stages, but we're already seeing studies come out concerning cognitive decline of people who rely on AI. AI is doing much more harm to students than good.

This would mean dropping a significant part of the curriculum (which is much more important) to spend time teaching about technology, which I'm not qualified to do. I'm also not convinced that there is an ethical way to use it in my field that's relevant to the classroom...

It will hurt in the short term but our only path forward is to adopt zero tolerance rules on ai use immediately. You use ai, you fail. When half of all students end up with Fs on their transcripts in the first semester after this is adopted, they will learn ai is untenable. The alternative is worse.

The alternative to zero tolerance ai rules is that college degrees become worthless. Once employers fully realize that probably 90% of students got their degrees because they cheated using ai, they won't want to hire them. This will also be extremely destructive to higher ed in general.

I've come to the unsettling conclusion that pretty much all of our students are using AI. I've always tried to bend over backwards to make things easier for students, but I think the only way to stop this is if universities initiate zero tolerance policies on ai. You use ai in a class, you fail.
