"For good news, take a look at Portland, Oregon."
A mathematician and a national election reformer join the Stump Talk podcast to discuss why Portland's reforms matter outside city limits.
“For the last few months, to anyone who's asked me for good news in democracy, I say: Take a look at Portland.”
Moon Duchin of Cornell speaks w/ @rosecityreform.bsky.social on how proportional #RankedChoiceVoting gave more voters a say in Portland, OR. rosecityreform.substack.com/p/for-good-n...

How Alaska is making government work again
Excellent opinion peice on the benefits of ranked choice voting in Alaska. Key takeaways: it promotes collaboration and effectiveness in government, it requires candidates to consider all voters so it's much more representative of the people.

‘It's a very dangerous strategy’: The controversial tactic super PACs used to boost Democrats this year
Outside groups spent millions helping third-party candidates siphon votes from Republicans, a move that eased the path to victory for some Democrats.
Maybe this gets the average Republican to like #RankedChoiceVoting more.
Dem super pacs just spent millions to siphon R voters to Libertarian and other 3rd parties.
RCV neutralizes this tactic for either party, as 3rd party voters rank D or R as 2nd choice.

In that 5-10% of elections where a first-round winner gets passed in the stretch for the win, it means they lacked broad support of 2nd or 3rd place choices of other candidates. When it happens, it's nothing more than the wisdom of majority rule.

Early ranked-choice voting leaders won in Portland
The final count shows initial frontrunners were likely to win the race altogether.
Critics of #RankedChoiceVoting should realize that more than 90% of the time, the first round winner gains support and wins a majority. Portland OR just held 10 RCV elections, and for 9, the first round leaders won, and in the 10th, the 1st round was nearly tied.

Washingtion Post editorial about #RankedChoiceVoting
"Alaskans saved ranked-choice voting (RCV) this month at the same time they elected a conservative Republican to Congress. In so doing, they undercut the accusation that the instant-runoff system mostly helps Democrats..."
