This was *the* case pro-Israel defenders would point at to say "See? Israel takes human rights violations seriously!"
And after all that — including mobs of Israeli rioters and politicians storming a military base to protest the arrest of these soldiers — it's being dropped.
As someone who spent every day trying to protect my community from ICE, to the point where I was personally assaulted, I’m so disappointed Mayor Frey vetoed this bare-minimum policy that would show that he could move beyond cuss words & take real action to provide material support for our neighbors.
Plain white background. Spider-Man is swinging on a web as he turns his head while talking to himself, again: "I'm going to see if I can find out what is going--oh boy!"
a neil gaiman defender contests a response of 'no' to a link to a substack, and is told 'I see that like Neil Gaiman, you don't understand that no is a complete sentence'

A photo of Mayor Mamdani leaning forward like he’s listening is overlaid on a simple striped background. Large text above his head reads “keep your promise! Fund nyc public libraries at 0.5% of the city budget.” Smaller text at the top reads “NYCPLAN Public Library Action Network” At the bottom of the image is an oblong bubble with text inside that reads “visit nycplan.org for more information”
Love your library? Help us secure stable funding!
Take 30 seconds and send the Mayor a short note;
Tell him to honor his promise, and fund the NYC library systems at a minimum of 0.5% of the city’s expense budget.

I wrote about the problematic history of the Oscars recognizing the work of Black directors.
I’m really proud of this one, so please spread it far and wide. It’s an important convo that’s been sadly absent from the Oscars discourse this year.
The bigger a media company becomes, the more mainstream it is, which defacto means it is no longer a subversive force.
People like novelty. Novelty comes from subversion. Subversion is cool. If you are the biggest, you're no longer cool, and people will look elsewhere for their entertainment.
This interview with the great @rebeccasolnit.bsky.social was a "wow" moment for me. Thanks, New York Times and David Marchese.

I couldn't help noticing the question that seemed the most Times-like to me.
if my dreams are truthful, new Metallica members are anointed similar to how new Pope's are anointed.
There's also the fact that Rowling has been fairly explicit that the money she earns through Harry Potter she's putting into anti-trans lobbying efforts.
There's a difference, IMHO, between an artist with a shitty private life, and an artist using their money to fund regressive social change.
dreamt that I had to fend off my family home from a flotilla of past present and future Metallica members
If I were you, I would read @jennieegerdie.bsky.social confessing to a hot dog bc it is A) funny 2) honest and 3) written by Jennie
we could have gotten the green new deal under biden the easy way, but because of trump we’re getting the hard way

I've submitted multiple. Never once been published. They often don't even publish my comments on anti trans nyt articles. It's that repressive.
there’s no progressive reason for dropping bombs on other countries! they all kill people and harm the environment! you can’t build anything from them!
Digital illustration by Olly Costello on a gray background. The text reads, “uproot tendencies toward policing others that exist inside you.” A person pulls a light blue leafy plant from their leg, its white roots embedded in their skin like constellations.
Digital illustration by Olly Costello on an olive green background. Light green text reads, “ask yourself: are my actions grounded in cultivating safety or control?” A person stands with their hands outstretched as two sunflowers grow beside them with deep purple leaves. The words “safety” and “control” appear on either side of their jeans.

Here's a thread featuring clips of key moments from the DC Metropolitan Police body camera footage of the March 17, 2025 DOGE raid on the US Institute of Peace that I obtained as a result of my FOIA lawsuit:
Tweet from TN Rep. Andy Ogles saying that "Muslims don't belong in American society"
The absolute most disgusting, eliminationist Islamophobia from multiple members of the House Republican caucus continues to spew forth without acknowledgment or censure

wild to see a studio voluntarily recognize a union. almost as if that's something every company could do!
Independent video game studio Heart Machine have formed a union with CWA Local 9003, joining thousands of video game workers who have organized with CWA at some of the industry’s largest studios!

The Oscars are Sunday. For @ebertvoices.bsky.social, I paid tribute to 10 great movies from 2025 whose names we won't hear once during the show. Which is a shame.
