It's not just you, strawberries have less flavor and aroma than they used to.
One surprising reason was published this year. No one wants anthracnose and botrytis eating their strawberries, so growers apply a fungicide like Pristine 38WG or Abound 2.08F or Quadris Top 1.67SC.

Immersed in abundance though I be, I do also feel that we have not yet domesticated nearly enough. We should have skirret that never gets the tough core, hopniss that rivals the potato, salal bred for flavor, chinquapins the size of Chinese chestnuts.
I have only hypotheses.
1. Fruiting in early June misses the worst of bug season.
2. Birds and rodents will eat them whole, and like them well enough that they probably disappear before having time to get moldy.

Some genes got lost as strawberry breeding progressed, but there are multiple ways to restore the genome. Also fungicides mess with the gene expression in ways that reduce aroma and flavor. Full thread:
The bulletproof guy talked me into getting an HRV monitor for HRV training but I put it on and found that either the sensor is garbage or I already perfect its metric effortlessly. I put it on a less zen family member and they got perfect readings too. Never trust a biohacker.
Speaking for myself, my wife says she never saw me happier than tending to my crops, and I think I could push the percent of my energy I grow myself quite high while remaining that happy. 100% would involve various unnecessary deprivations and risks though.

I even got something out of Jupiter Ascending because the ships looked neat. But Foundation, for all of its faults, is some of the best space and spaceship eye candy in a while. Also Lee Pace is great.
