One of my best friends is a queer west african man that I met in Brazil. He explicitly told me that he never wants to go home and discouraged me from visiting; it truly isnt safe for visibly queer people. As a diaspora, we will be dealing with the damage of homophobic legislature for generations.
Unfortunately, we cannot dismiss this as an "African" problem. The homophobic uncles & aunties of these nations with cruel anti-gay laws are here. They migrate to pro Black cities with liberal lgbtq laws, ironically because they are "safer" US cities.
We, collectively, have a lot to sit with.
My heart goes out to all queer Africans, because homophobic policies are sweeping across West & Central Africa.
It's Senegal's work to decolonize and they have not done so. I'm thankful my ancestors did that work so that some of us can be free, and provide refuge. Because this is a damn mess.
