Today, ghostwriting websites must work to advertise why they could perform their writing-for-hire services better than a machine.
The program allows authors to verify that their books are written completely by a human and not generated by software, and then gives them a trademarked seal to signal that the book is human authored.
Here’s a quick thread on why this is important and how you can most effectively get involved:
🚨🚨🚨 ACTION ALERT: Massachusetts readers, ask your legislators to protect the freedom to read by supporting H.3594, An Act Regarding Free Expression. This bill would strengthen protections for libraries & students’ right to read.

Picture of a panel in a conference center. There is a dias with a black curtain at the front, and a gray podium. Behind the dias sits Carmen Maria Machado, a fair-skinned femme wearing glasses with dark hair, Umair Kazi, a brown masc with dark hair, Alex Hanna, a brown butch trans woman with short brown hair, and Vauhini Vara, a brown woman with long black hair wearing a red blouse.
There were 250 people in the audience, at the biggest available room for our #awp26 panel, Resisting AI in Writing and Teaching.
It was invigorating; hearing about how writing instructors are pushing back against their institutions was inspiring. Thanks to my co-panelists Carmen and Umair.

Human Authored is a project of the Authors Guild that allows an author to certify that their book is created by a human. “Human Authored” means that the text of the book was written by a human and not generated by AI, with the exception of minimal uses, such as AI applications that check spelling and grammar or for brainstorming or research.
So cool that @authorsguild.org has a place where members can go to certify that they did not use AI in writing their books... go.authorsguild.org/account/huma...
If you're a member of the @authorsguild.org and you write your own books (as opposed to letting AI do it), I recommend you take advantage of their Human Authored Certification. It's a free member benefit and costs a mere $10/title for nonmembers.

The will to ban a text is a signal of impact: it indicates that a creative product presents a perceived insult either to power structures or to the self-appointed guardians of an ideology or status quo. In other words, the gesture of banning suggests social relevance
PDFs are notoriously difficult for machines to parse, in part, because they were never meant to be read by them
Your inability to focus isn’t a failing. It’s a design problem, and the answer isn’t getting rid of our screen time.
So what can we do? This shifting definition of first amendment rights to protect the government, not the people, is a stunning degradation of free speech rights. And it's happening in the dark. Tell your friends. Tell your family. Tell everyone you can. Authors Against Book Bans Freedom to Read Freedom to Create
The tl;dr version: HB 1069 mandates that materials be removed from school classrooms and libraries if an objection is filed alleging that the material is pornographic, harmful to minors, or depicts or describes sexual conduct. It has led to the removal and rejection of a lot of books by districts in a bid to avoid legal trouble and get out ahead of any public objections. Proponents of book censorship are wielding it like a club against school districts, and parents opposed to it have little recourse. Parents, authors, and publishers filed suit in August 2024. It is currently in the appeals process, being heard in the Eleventh Circuit U.S. District Court.
While this is a Florida law and legal suit, 21 states recently filed their own amicus brief in support of the law and the Florida State Board of Education: Arkansas, Alabama, Alaska, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, lowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and West Virginia What is this bill and why does it matter?
There is currently an ongoing legal case in Florida regarding House Bill 1069 (passed in 2023) To defend this bill, the State of Florida is arguing that public school libraries are controlled by the government and considered "government speech," so they are exempt from the First Amendment and can censor anything they disagree with. They classify public school libraries as a "government benefit" that they are not required to provide.
