My monthly newsletter is out!

A kei truck on the road through Muikamachi. In the distance you can see the mountains (covered in snow) plus large wall of snow on either side of the road.
A couple of new notes up about my snowboarding weekend in Muikamachi - it's such a pretty town βοΈ

My subscription renews a bit before the pricing changes kick in so I'm safe for another year π but will probably need to migrate next year..
This month I tried out knitting for the first time - bit of a rough start but I think I've managed to figure out the basics π

Yay, thanks!!
Thankyou! π
Well, surprisingly apparently there's only 10,000 species of birds (I feel like there should be more...) so I don't need to fit in that many π
I've accumulated photos of nearly 40 different birds now, so I decided to make a dedicated page for them on my blog!
Was debating whether to branch out into other animals and bugs but I think I will keep it simple and just go with birds for now
www.emgoto.com/birding/
No probs! I like seeing people's bucket lists, so I'm keen to see what you'll add/remove from it!
The https link in bucket list is missing the p π
Thankyou!! I think I can attribute it all to hiking, I don't think I would have been motivated to head around to so many places otherwise π
Ah yes I'm starting to sort of stumble upon that problem, I'm now making a new birding section on my blog (I keep adding sections, I have a problem π) and I'm trying to figure out how to link out to different images in different posts and then store them under 1 bird.
Thanks Brittany!
As for the categories, I just used tags, except I filter them down (so if it's not food or coffee or etc, then ignore them). And if a post is tag-less than I assign it the "place" tag by default since that's what it probably is.
Can't get too detailed in Bluesky but let me know if that helps π
So as an optional piece of frontmatter on my posts, I have a lat/lng position marker you can store.
And then I have hardcoded boundaries (like this square in the map = Japan).
And then finally there's some code that will calculate given a lat/lng, which country/area it belongs to
Screenshot of the top bit of Japan's mainland - Aomori, Akita and Iwate prefectures. There is a conspicuous lack of dots on this part of the map.
I've done quite a good job of visiting various bits of Japan, but you might notice the top end of the Tohoku is looking quite bare - I had plans to visit Iwate in 2025 but that got rained out, and I have done two hikes in Aomori back in 2023 which I still need to put up on the blog π
My /map/ page now has a LHS sidebar with location filtering, and tag filtering on hikes, coffee, food, etc. The RHS is a map of Japan. It's mostly a lot of green dots, since my blog is mostly hikes (ha)
Filtering by coffee in Tokyo results with a few pink dots.
I had this vision in my head for a while now for what my Map page should look like and I think I'm kind of there now!
You can now filter by location and category, which could be handy e.g. if you are looking for hikes to do in a specific area π

Very nice π
Yeah it varies by state, but Sydney/NSW has 9 days in 2026 while Japan has 17 π
My Australian coworkers are always jealous of how many public holidays Japan seems to have π
thanks Robin!!
Would love a whole series on this!
Screenshot of the search bar, accessible in my navigation's side drawer. I've searched in "Niigata" and its returned some results
Another screenshot of the search experience, but this time from my book reviews page, which is in lightmode.
Latest update on the blog - I added a search bar β¨
My book reviews section is the only non-dark mode section of my blog so I had to get it (mostly) working for two colour schemes. I need to get around to properly doing dark/light mode across the site sometime.
A photo of a mejiro. It has a distinctive white ring around its eye. It's a kind of light khaki-ish greenish head with a dirty brown body. Around it is a bush with snow on it
Another photo of the mejiro, looking away from the camera
It snowed overnight in Tokyo. One of my goals for February was to get a photo of a warbling white-eye or "mejiro" (they are so cute!)
... and then there were a couple flitting about in the snow-covered bushes right outside my apartment which made things pretty easy π
Yeah Hardcover lets you set canonical URLs on your reviews as well, which is a nice plus (Goodreads would never, haha).
API for the series tracker specifically? No plans yet, but Hardcover itself already does have an API! (was one of the main reasons I switched over from Goodreads initially)

Screenshot of the series tracker page - it shows that I am following the Hierarchy series by James Islington, plus the Children of Time series by Adrian Tchaikovsky. Both of them have a new book coming out in the future π
We shipped a new feature on @hardcover.app recently - the long-awaited series tracker! It lets you see your in-progress book series, plus which ones have upcoming releases.
And I've moved over from Substack to @buttondown.com!
