Jeremy Allard reviews Amanda Strong's wintery stop-motion film Inkwo for When the Starving Return, based on the short story Wheetago War by Richard Van Camp. In a future stalked by starving monsters, a young hero must learn to harness their medicine and fight back.

Successfully tracking down a dimly remembered thing online is such an unreasonably good feeling!

Congratulations to Christopher Notarnicola on having “Dysgeusia” (in our fall 2025 issue) included in Best Microfiction. And congratulations to all these writers of stunning micros!

I do think it's interesting that both of these takes seem to assume the purpose of criticism is to bring about a change of behavior in the person or institution being criticised, as opposed to say, adding ideas to a public conversation about the behavior, its effects, and its causes. 🤷‍♀️
