the morning shakeout | issue 537 A brief race recap, reframing rest and recovery, joy as the most important element of performance, and a lot more.

My weekly newsletter is a real-time roundup of things I’m up to, thinking about, interested in, reading, watching, and/or listening to. It’s my hope that what I share makes you smile, think for a second, or reflect upon something you hadn’t considered. themorningshakeout.substack.com/p/the-mornin...

Ha! To be fair, I do it to myself first.

Ahhhh. Still a heck of a run!

Awesome recap and thanks for the backstory on Shuley. Heck of a debut! I need to do some digging but it may be the fastest debut marathon ever by an American male. What say you @d9monti.bsky.social?

Intermittently! That’s not a Glass problem though, that’s a me not taking as many photos problem. I enjoy it and scroll the feed often for inspiration. It’s a quiet corner of the internet but the interactions tend to be deeper than other places. (I just haven’t been interacting much.) Worth a try!

Thanks buddy. I had a lot of fun. Need to work on my last 100 though!

the morning shakeout | issue 531 Running to find out, the case for thick desires, putting the pieces together for performance, and a lot more.

"I run to find out who I am.
I run to find out who I might become.
I run to find out who else understands me."

This week's issue of The Morning Shakeout hits home differently. Thank you, as always, for your words, @mariofraioli.com! πŸ₯°

I can't say that I blame you! The current state of affairs here is ridiculous.

Way to sneak that in there! Also, both my daily notebook (i.e. the memo book and running training log (i.e. the 56-week planner) are from Field Notes. Great company and products.

Meanwhile, a not insignificant number of the best XC runners in the world were denied visas for this weekend's world championships in Florida.

Let me know when the airing starts. I want in. (Vaguely remember doing this with you in the other place many, many years ago.)

Have you officially started airing your grievances yet or is this just regular commentary?

Fair point. FWIW, I was/am a fan of the general concept and format of GST. I understand operating at a loss in year 1/2, but the thing that kills me is the money clearly wasn't there to cover expenses, yet they spent like it was. Just poor business practice at best, straight-up deception at worst.

Oooph. Not good on a number of levels.

Calling it "short track" will never not be stupid.

That was really good! Also had no idea @slorgebutler.bsky.social was a fellow Central Mass. native.

Normalizing Rest Hat tip to Mario Fraioli for the idea for this post. He discusses β€œthe importance of making time for quiet, creating space for ourselves, and slowing down in both running and in life” in a recent…

Today is a rest day. Rest is important and we should be proud of rest days.

There’s a lot that makes the NYC Marathon so special, but from a competitive standpoint, it’s the race itself that separates it from the rest. Both of today’s finishes were evidence of that. Far more exciting than watching someone sit on a pacer for 30K and wondering if they can beat the clock.

a light blond golden retriever puppy wearing an olive green beanie sits on a picnic table in a park. the trees in the background are green and orange with fall foliage. his floppy green beanie is pulled down on his noggin, pressing a line of his fluffy forehead fur forward, and gluing his ears to the sides of his face. he looks ever so slightly downcast that no one understands him. photo credit wat.ki on instagram

This is Poet. He would have really crushed it as a barista in theΒ early to mid-2010s. Born in the wrong decade smh. 12/10

Exactly. And this is part of the reason why we can't have nice things, i.e., a clean sport.

And while we're on the topic, why do the Chicago Marathon and other races in the Marathon Majors series continue to do business with Federico Rosa given the long list of high-profile athletes he’s represented that have failed doping tests? This is one of the biggest travesties in pro running today.

The fact that Cheptngetich's WR will be allowed to stand is total bullshit. If you think she was clean in Chicago then I've got some oceanfront property in Kansas I'd like to sell you.
