We used bitvectors in C apps. A simple isSet() check against the integer and a lookup table. Unfortunately, that solution has it options limited by the size of the integer. Table lookups with 2 bitvectors was revolutionary.
You could make it an enum class with an overloaded helper on the getter which accommodates the custom case lookup and/or default that checks the optional pronouns strings and returns those. It will be fast in the common lookup case and only slightly less efficient in the custom case.

Wolves in captivity live longer. They get hip displasia (sp?), arthritis and weight related spinal issues. With a light sedative given almost anyone could interact with them.
