Nobel chemistry laureate Frances Arnold: ‘Whole swaths of science are just going to die on the vine’
The Caltech professor on using AI to harness the power of enzymes — and what US funding cuts could mean for research
Nobel laureate Frances Arnold has had an extraordinary journey from teenage rebellion in Pittsburgh to harnessing AI to evolutionary biology to create new kinds of chemistry.
I sat down with her for a Lunch with the FT in the bistro of Stockholm's Nobel Prize Museum.

Elisabetta Chicca - Bio-inspired circuits and systems
Yesterday evening: a fascinating lecture by my colleague Elisabetta Chicca ( @zernike-institute.bsky.social @rug.nl ) about her research “what goes on inside the insect brain”. Including cool videos of both insects and robots, plus actual demos in the room. Part of the ongoing ..

Captain Haddock looking very frazzled, saying, “What a week, huh?”
Tintin leans into the frame and says, “Captain, it’s Wednesday.”
Snowy aka Milou is very excited about the drink he has found.

the microfluidic channels
Do you know those annoying layer lines you get with FDM 3D printers? Those layers you try to avoid or hide?
What if I tell you we can use them to make 15-micrometer-tall microfluidic channels?

A photo of a fossilized trilobite. It is brown in color and somewhat resembles a horseshoe crab.
It's Trilobite Tuesday! Proetid trilobites survived in the world's seas for almost 200 million years, beginning in the early stages of the Ordovician & lasting until the end of the Permian Period. The specimen pictured—the proetid Warburgella—comes from Malvern, England's Silurian Period exposures.

Kōkako, a large grey songbird with blue wattles, on Tiritiri
When I headed to Aotearoa, I thought my top target passerine was the South Island saddleback. But I'd badly underestimated the North Island kōkako.
I've never heard such an extraordinary song. And they're so large and marvelous. Sadly I never got a great photo, but what a bird!
