A mnemonic device for remembering the Great Lakes
That's me ๐! I'll be giving a quick overview of my #acoustictelemetry positioning and clock synchronization toolset this thursday at the OTN study hall.
This Thursday! Come chat with @rtbecard.bsky.social about kaltoa - a package for Kalman filtered time-of-arrival positioning of acoustic tag detection data. Check the User Guide linked here, and come by Study hall this Thursday for questions with James! rtbecard.gitlab.io/kaltoa/
Today is World Fisheries Day! ๐ฃ
Fishing has been an essential part of human history for thousands of years and continues to support communities around the world. In recent decades, technological advances have expanded the range of fishing vessels and increased their efficiency,

News! The European Tracking Network just logged its 1,000,000,000th detection! ๐๐
Since GPS doesnโt work underwater, telemetry is a key to help us understanding fish movements, essential for conservation and management.
Huge thanks to everyone uploading data - great teamwork! ๐

๐ Calling all aquatic animal movement researchers! Weโre excited to share opportunities at the @worldbioforum.bsky.social in Davos, June 14โ19, 2026. Join the global community advancing biodiversity research! (1/3)
โFIRโโฆ nice one!

FINALLY! ๐ฅณ
A Baltic Sea Tracking Network is on the way!! Thanks in part to a receiver loan from @oceantracking.bsky.social members of ETN based at SLU & LUKE (Finland) have deployed what we hope is just the beginning ๐ช

Last month, OTNโs data team hosted our International Data Management Committee (IDMC) for their annual in-person meeting! The IDMC provides guidance on data processes and policies, helping us stay aligned with internationally recognized standards. Thank you for your partnership and support!
A whole lot of buoys at RAEOn getting ready for field deployments
๐ Hey there! While field season has kept us busy, happy, and (probably) wetโฆ here are some upcoming conferences to keep you indoors, networking, and dry:

OTN has a squad of ROVs to help us explore the depths, recover infrastructure, train field technicians, support outreach and education, and track ocean life like never before. Each one brings unique powers to aid you on your epic journey. Choose your ROV... ๐ฎ ๐
Tagging of Mustelus asterias
What a week itโs been! Iโve visited @lottepohl.bsky.social & David Casals at @vliz.be in Belgium for our #EMFish project. My first time seeing and tagging a Mustelus asterias - so cool! Thanks for a very fun day on the North Sea!

A fantastic job opportunity for someone to work at the interface between Atlantic salmon habitat modelling and management. Cutting edge research as part of an excellent project team.
Postdoc offer : Remote sensing modeler of Atlantic salmon river habitat suitability
We are looking for a resourcefull person with cross-over expertises in remote sensing (Lidar and satellite imagery), programming, wildlife habitat modelling... and ideally hydraulic modelling and AI. ;-)
New paper ๐จ Do pathogens predict salmon survival? In our recently published study on the Endangered Atlantic salmon, we combined acoustic telemetry with pathogen and gene expression profiles. Read the paper here

A comparison of PMC-TOA & CTCRW and YAPS within a case study on smolt migrations. Here, YAPS consistently failed to fully converge and didn't return standard error values (i.e. no confidence ellipses).
A comparison of PMC-TOA and TDOA positioning applied to a smolt migration dataset. Positions are post processed with a Kalman filtered CTCRW model. Tag reflections resulted in incoherent tracks for TDOA positioning.
Satellite image of the study area where the case study data was collected and which the simulated study was based on. The fishpass and spillway are hard structures and likely culprits for causing the reflected tag transmissions detected across the receiver array.
New #FishSci #AcousticTelemetry positioning paper: PMC-TOA positioning.
I used adaptive importance sampling & mixture distributions to position fish in environments prone to tag reflections. Mixed with post-processing, this gives great tracks!

How do mobile ocean robots compare to traditional acoustic arrays when tracking sharks and other coastal fish? ๐ค๐
A new study explores this by comparing a Wave Glider to a stationary acoustic array off Cape Canaveral, FL.

Today is International Shark Day!
Sharks are over 550 species that come in many shapes and sizes, from the minuscule 20 cm long dwarf lanternshark to the almost 100 times longer whale shark. Amazing! (but not a surprise, which was ruined by their names).
#Lotek is at the Joint Meeting of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists this week in Saint Paul, Minnesota! Come find us at the Saint Paul RiverCentre until July 13, 2025. Weโve got #ORCA on display and are ready to chat all things telemetry.
The Braasch Lab @fishevodevogeno.bsky.social will soon post a position to replace manager of our *Ancient Fish Facility* at Michigan State. Looking for aquaculturist excited for unusual ๐ species (gar, bowfin, paddlefish, polypterus) + zebrafish. Pls send candidates our way (DM or braasch@msu.edu)!

Today I saw the narrowest car I have ever seen driving on Dunbrack street in Halifax. It was yellowish and looked like it would only fit one passenger. I didnโt get a very good look at it but was hoping someone here might know this car and what it is.
Struggling with code collisions? Increased Residency (IR) Coding can help.
Increased Residency is a free tag coding that leverages NexTrak receivers to increase residency limits, boost detection rates up to 5x, and lower code collisions in high-tag-volume areas.

When I wrote an op-ed during the campaign saying that Project 2025 called for the near-total elimination of NOAA and that ocean scientists should therefore oppose Trump and support Harris, senior scientists in my field called me alarmist and hysterical and unprofessional
