AG Rayfield sues to stop unlawful data demand to colleges and universities

“This administration has already gone after our elections and a free press – now they're focusing on higher education. Independent universities are a cornerstone of a free society. Oregon's colleges and universities should answer to their students and their communities, not to a federal government, using surveillance and the threat of penalties to dictate how our institutions operate.”

AG Rayfield and multistate coalition are challenging the Trump administration’s new demand that colleges and universities provide new data about past and current students, disaggregated by race and sex. This rushed new requirement for the Integrated Postsecondary Education System (IPEDS) survey leaves colleges and universities vulnerable to inadvertent errors and unreliable data that could lead to costly penalties and baseless investigations into their practices. It also jeopardizes student privacy by requesting in-depth information about individual students.
