SEND reforms to 'strip away' children's legal protections, charity says Planned changes to the special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) system in England were announced last month.

"If reform is to rebuild confidence with families, it must strengthen and not strip away the protections that children and young people depend on."

The Government may think its work is done, but the battle over SEND reforms is only just beginning.

When these school vouchers were first introduced, they were only available to low-income families. Now, every family is eligible.

The result?

"it’s likely a large chunk of the more than 13,000 new [voucher] recipients this school year come from households with incomes of more than $125,000."

Iowa's surging ESAs now subsidize 99% of private school students Nearly all Iowa private school students are participating in the state's Education Savings Account program now that income restrictions have lifted

Parents in Iowa can use $8,000 of public funding to attend a school of their choice, including private schools.

School voucher advocates, rejoice!

Oh, wait. Most families that use the vouchers at private schools already attended that school beforehand.

And it's nuggets like this that make me wonder how much political pain / obsfucation could have been avoided over the last 15 years if they'd not called them 'student loans' and just branded them as 'Graduate Contributions' instead.

Anyone serious about fixing this mess will no doubt look at this.

EDSK - EVOLUTION AND REVOLUTION This report sets out a 10-year plan to reform the curriculum, assessment and accountability system for state schools and colleges in England.

We absolutely need to reduce the appalling exam burden on young people, particularly GCSE students. Link below to my report on how I would do this.

Scrapping coursework and other supervised work is still the only sensible response to GenAI tools such as ChatGPT.

I mean, anyone who genuinely thinks that teachers can stop students cheating if they just "explain the deeper point, that the effort of learning is where the value lies" clearly has never met a teenager.

They're rational actors. Cheating is zero cost and the chance of getting caught is almost zero.

03.03.2026 12:03 πŸ‘ 2 πŸ” 1 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

I'm concerned too, and have been for the last 3.5 years.

Can we please stop putting teachers in the firing line by expecting them to catch cheats? Imploring them to "talk to your students about AI before problems arise" is pointless for so many reasons.

All coursework needs to be scrapped. End of.

The 27 independent schools that converted into state schools from 2007 to 2016 sometimes struggled to adapt to the demands of the state sector, but they rapidly improved after their conversion.

27 independent schools have jumped into the state sector since 2007, and these former fee-paying schools are performing well on national tests.

My new report for @pepforum.bsky.social calls for more independent schools to be able to switch sectors.

Great point. As we say in the report, the gap between these former independent schools and local state schools has been closing, but they are also close to the national average (on SEND, I think they've almost hit the national average). Maybe a few percentage points still left to go on FSM.
