A 3×3 collage of close-up photographs of daffodils in bloom, showing different varieties in shades of yellow and white. Some have bright golden trumpets, others pale petals with contrasting cups, all set against soft green garden backgrounds.

According to old tradition, daffodils bloom around 1st March in honour of Saint David, the patron saint of Wales. His feast day falls on this date and coincides with the beginning of meteorological spring. #StDavidsDay #FolkloreSunday

An account in her own words, of a nurse’s ordeal when her ship was torpedoed in #WW1 Hidden in her records, she speaks to us across the years After spending 4 hours in the water and being injured, she begged to try again to get to Salonica!

Cluster of bright yellow daffodils in bloom, their flared trumpets and pointed petals catching soft spring light. Slender blue-green leaves rise upright from the grass, with one one bloom just beginning to unfurl among the fresh flowers. The background is gently blurred, suggesting an early spring garden setting.

Shrove Tuesday marks the eve of Lent. Lent comes from Old English lencten, meaning spring and the lengthening of days as light increases. An old name for the daffodil is Lent lily; it begins to flower around now, its bright yellow trumpets quietly heralding the coming of spring.

Roman auxiliary cavalry helmet.

A bronze cheek piece from the helmet’s left hand side.

Dredged up from River Tyne at South Shields. The helmet perhaps belonged to a soldier based on/near Hadrian’s Wall or from South Shields fort.

Now Great North Museum: Hancock, Newcastle

A delicate still life painting of pale yellow primroses arranged in a green-patterned china jug and saucer, accompanied by a small glass of deep violet flowers. Soft, natural light and muted tones give the composition a gentle, springtime intimacy. The painting is by the Scottish artist Anne Cotterill (1933-2010).

The German name for the primrose, Schlüsselblume, means “key flower,” said to be inspired by a Flemish legend. According to the tale, these flowers were placed upon the earth to “unlock” spring, ushering in a vibrant procession of blossoms and bright sunshine. #folklore #nature

Thank you for this. Have sorted my hellebores and they look so much better minus old leaves. You've reminded me to cut back the epimediums! I always leave too late and then don't see much of the pretty flowers.

England's First Bespectacled Scholar?

This gargoyle on Great Ponton's church tower (1519) may be one of the earliest representations of spectacles in English sculpture. Our scholarly figure peers through his glasses while holding pen and parchment - perhaps immortalising a real person.
