Slender blue-green leaves rise upright from the grass, with one one bloom just beginning to unfurl among the fresh flowers. The background is gently blurred, suggesting an early spring garden setting.

Shrove Tuesday marks the eve of Lent. Lent comes from Old English lencten, meaning spring and the lengthening of days as light increases. An old name for the daffodil is Lent lily; it begins to flower around now, its bright yellow trumpets quietly heralding the coming of spring.

This gargoyle on Great Ponton's church tower (1519) may be one of the earliest representations of spectacles in English sculpture. Our scholarly figure peers through his glasses while holding pen and parchment - perhaps immortalising a real person.
