A hand is holding a tan-colored travel mug. The logo on the mug says LL16 and has a stylized image of the nearby decommissioned coalmine's Bauhaus-style winding tower. In the near background are twinkling lights and a decorated evergreen tree. In the farther background is the blurry outline of small outdoor shops and a carousel. The sky is dark. It is night time.

A bit of mid-week fun:

Since the time I was a PhD student, I've always found the annual #LinguisticLandscape workshop to be a welcoming, almost familial space. Where else can you enjoy a mother-son talk, like today's "Collapse and transformation of Jefferson Street in Nashville Tennessee" by Becky and Nick Garvin? ❀️ #LL16

That's why we're asking you to please bring a laptop and an appropriate HDMI and/or VGA adapter. Also, for our international participants, beware of EU plugs. You might need an adapter for charging your laptop's battery as well.

Let's see if you can spot some more examples of Ruhrdeutsch in the linguistic landscape of Essen when you're here!

By the way, "HΓΆmma! SchΓΆn, datte da bis!" is the locals' way of saying "It's great you're here!"

The authors further note that "[t]he positive valorisation of Ruhrdeutsch and its use as a regional symbol are also visible in the linguistic landscape of the Ruhr Area.

For instance, the city of Essen has started using the regional attention-getter HΓΆmma/HΓΆr mal ('Listen') ...

In line with historical structural changes in the area that beautifully fit our conference theme, positive attitudes towards the local linguistic variety have emerged, with "Ruhrdeutsch becom[ing] an anchor point for [the locals'] own regional feeling [of home]" (Ziegler & Angenendt 2024:164).

Ruhrdeutsch is the regional dialect spoken by the locals in the Ruhr Area (sometimes also referred to as the "Ruhrpott"), where #LL16 will be hosted.

Today, one in five kids in Germany will start their lives in bi/multilingual homes.

The collapse of regimes, the collapse of industries, the collapse of walls; all these have contributed to the transformation of our region into what it has become today (and our logo!). More next week. Stay tuned!
