For those (especially scholars of 18th-century France) who might enjoy a productive distraction, any thoughts on the identity of this hotel (which has so far escaped my sleuthing)? It was located, I presume, on the Place des Carmes in Marseille in the mid 1780s. Merci! #18C
Ooooo. Juicy.
Sooo I just checked in with one of my old gigs for which I was paid approx. $15. It now has abt. 331 million views. I apologise, parents. I didn't try very hard.

Just had a tasty AI SNAFU that I did not request (just Google). Edward Gibbon. Edward. Not done laughing. #c18 #c18th
The Guardian is not American. What I object to is not the lack of focus but the angle of interpretation. The implication of the above piece is that Canadians blindly chose someone they don't know when PM Carney has been in the Canadian consciousness for years. It's silly.
I'm reconsidering my subscription because of the slant of the reporting on Canada. It's appalling.
This article annoyed me. Patronising.
Matt Jones's book "Predators, Reapers and Deadlier Creatures" is finally out! A drone operator confronts monsters within and without with compassion and delightfully dark humour. Not your average war writer, folks. Listen to World Radio Paris tomorrow to hear him interviewed! a.co/d/1DOGnGq #canlit
Reading "Champion of English Freedom: The Life of John Wilkes" in excellent circumstances and enjoying it immensely. #c18 #18thc @georgianlords.bsky.social
I'm overjoyed by any mention of Ridley so I know I'll enjoy it. I have to admit that I feel a bit faint thinking of those cut interactions! Ridley peeks out from behind a curtain in the lives of so many major figures of his time. I'm the lone weirdo who can't stop trying to peek back.
I've been researching a friend of Mr. Wilkes for some time. They travelled together to Marseilles via Toulon on a very uncomfortable ship. I'm sure you're familiar with that 1765 voyage. Major Ridley's life was not as the pedigrees and official accounts indicate. I wonder if you've come across him?

This is the longest of long shots, but does anyone have easy access to a copy of Kathleen Jeffreys' "Kaapse archiefstukken lopende over het jaar 1781" (1930)? I'm looking for a photograph of p. 431. Bedankt! #C18 π
Much appreciated. Thanks!
Hi Terese!
You are responsible for much rejoicing and jumping around.
Brilliant. Exactly what I was looking for! Thank you so much. Huzzah!
Thank you for the context. I wasn't sure how quickly the specter had receded. More certain now that the term hadn't shifted too much in meaning over the intervening 19 years.
The three instances of Wilkes referring to the man's previous Jacobitism seemed to indicate a political stance. I thought it could be a political pejorative but it could be as you suggest. Disappointed by my inability to psychically insert myself into the minds of historical figures. *shakes fist*
In 1764 John Wilkes referred to a 30-yr old friend as a "reformed Jacobite." I'm hoping that someone can confirm that considering the time period and the friend's age Wilkes is referring to a Tory past. #c18th #c18

All of you folks amplifying this quest are truly wonderful. Thank you.
π This is the long-shottiest long shot. I am seeking a particular 1806 copy of Pilgrim's Progress sold to Barter Books in Alnwick after 2014. Its cover is part leather and part marbled paper. Within are inscribed the names of George Ridley's family members. #books #bookhistory
