First headline I've seen about my country today has me feeling a bit of that so yeah...
I didn't take any good photos of today's work but here's the LCD itself and its insides (I've done a LED backlight mod since taking the internal photos)
And pretty much all of this involved adding/removing/moving SMD resistors, because they hardwired a lot of things that would have trimpots in the reference design. It's based on a Sharp IR3Y31AM chip if you're curious, the datasheet for IR3Y29AM is available and seems to be basically the same chip.
I meant to say on the sharpness thing, the reason it was "like 200%" seems to be a design error. There's a voltage divider with 27K+3.3K which looks like it should be 27K+33K for a sane setting, i.e. wrong order of magnitude on one. Changing to the latter produces the above result.
Here's a very rough before and after on the sharpening mod. I changed other stuff between these shots (and didn't get the focus the same) but you can see the weird glowy outlines on the left and then after adjustment mostly gone.
And lastly I've been having issues with the auto level control (AGC) during my testing, but hey turns out it's safe to short the AGC filter cap to ground and that just outright disables it with sane default levels. Now an all-white screen on one of my test sources actually looks white and not gray.
But in the process, I discovered that an annoying oversharpening effect I was chasing wasn't some signal issue but an intentional sharpening feature on the IC turned up to like 200%. Got rid of that and now it doesn't look like crap.
Spent today doing mostly pointless mods to an analog LCD because my famicom was way too bright on it. Simulating the input circuit suggested to lower the levels there. I did that, all good. Tried another source... too dark. The LCD was fine & I screwed up the simulation, the problem is the famicom.
Is it weird that I use webp for local/private image storage for things that rarely need to go anywhere outside my filesystem and like one or two programs

I've seen other recreations start with acrylic for the center piece and, presumably finding it too weak, switch to sheet metal. I have another idea though. The original plate is about 1.2mm thick which is a standard PCB thickness, and FR4 PCBs are pretty strong and dirt-cheap for custom outlines.
Took me a while but I'm looking at this again, marking out clearance areas so I can start on the proper redesign
Here to say that 24V is the best option but if you're not using the printer yet then it will also work with a more common 12V supply. It must be 5.5x2.1 to make a proper connection, not 5.5x2.5. I think the original may actually be 5.5x1.7 but 2.1 is close enough.
