A thing I think about a lot is how security fads wax and wane. Car radios used to be removable. The Central Park Reservoir used to have a huge chain link fence around it. Manhattan apartments used to have four locks on their doors.

It is a photo of the sock and underwear drawer at my local Target store, which has been transformed into clinical white dystopian rows of locked glass doors. A sign on the locked case says “Working to serve you better. Secured shelves in the store keep the products on your list in stock.”

Target’s underwear aisle becoming a brutalist high-security vault “to serve you better” is a scene left on Verhoeven’s cutting room floor for being “too much”
