It’s what us “elders” were taught. Before high efficiency appliances a lot of stuff was basically just slightly automating a step or two of a process. Adding fabric softener/bleach at specific points of the wash cycle? Pre wash most of the crap from dishes? These were REQUIRED.

I was at a tobacco plant once. They had vending machines for standard office supplies. I thought it was a great idea. Employees swipe their ID cards for whatever they need. It gets allocated / budgeted as needed. Automatic re-ordering of supplies that are low.
