New paper on ‘detachment’ as (non)relation, which is partly an intervention into debates around relations/relationality, and partly the latest in a series on attachment-detachment. In Progress in Human Geography

I pre-ordered this book "Techno-Negative: A Long History of Refusing the Machine" and am looking forward to it. I don't know the author's work but I am very interested in the topic. Seems very timely. www.upress.umn.edu/978151791773...

The image is a profile introducing the Website Co-ordinator, Thomas Dekeyser. On the left hand side of the image, there is a headshot of Thomas with brown hair, looking towards the camera. To the right of the image, the text reads: "Introducing... THOMAS DEKEYSER Lecturer in Human Geography, University of Southampton" Below this is a text box section detailing Thomas' latest projects. He explains that his work, in the form of writing and films, examines the shifting co-ordinates of power and resistance and digital and urban environments. He has a new monograph out in March 2026, titled Techno-Negative: A Long History of Refusing the Machine. He continues to engage with the politics of refusal in a world increasingly saturated with AI. At the bottom is a final black text box, "Research interests: digital technology; refusal; negativity; Artificial Intelligence; pessimism; geographical theory; creative methods." The background is a mix of white and intersecting grey and black geometric shapes to highlight the quoted information.
Next up in the series…

It's only out in March 2026, but I heard pre-orders are now possible 😏 it's a theoretical history of technological refusal that starts in ancient Greece with the earliest machine breakers, and ends in 1980s France with anarchists bombing computer companies.

💥 New publication out on the alignment of AI & authoritarianism 💥
We argue that AI is not simply extending, but actively modulating, key dynamics of authoritarianism, and present a flexible analytical framework to account for these changes.

Human Geography at Leicester is facing closure. Staff contracts are to end in June 2026; students are to be relocated to other universities, or taught out by a maximum of two (!) teaching-only staff. Other departments and subjects are facing closure, too. Please join the demo!
