Bob Dylan’s film catalogue is generally derided.
In his impressive new book, Bob Dylan As Filmmaker, Michael Glover Smith re-assesses Dylan on film. A film-maker as well as a Dylan fan, Smith has the ideal CV for the job.
And he delivers.

For me Dylan’s quote about “learning to do consciously what I once did unconsciously” is the perfect description of how/why all of Barnett’s efforts since her debut fail - they seem like various bad copies of trying to re-find a kind of magic. Must suck. Yet the fame machine rolls on unbothered.
This is a valuable and interesting conversation on parts of Dylan that haven’t been talked to death - two thoughtful folks share the good stuff.
@inthephishbowl.bsky.social uses her terrific Dylan podcast here to explore concepts like creativity and the art of performance with this fascinating interview. She calls it Dylan adjacent but it’s also exploring art through the lens that Dylan brings us. Highly recommend.

I love rehearsal tapes, and here’s one of my favorites. Dylan and Petty and the Heartbreakers ripping through a bunch of tubes they’d never play live (including Beatles and Drifters covers Bob sings the hell out of)
