Why can't governments demand that social media companies open up their algorithms to scrutiny? Like ingredients in food?
And demand an end to harmful patterns such as infinite scroll...

I was lolling at the fact that students have parking... In the UK, there's barely parking for the staff!
I'm off Twitter, how's Wilson getting on with his new thing?
... "The school installed solar panels in its student parking lot, which offset its electricity costs." Lol.
Not a school uniform, green pen, or whiff of original sin in sight. Lots of themes from the UK gov white paper: Every child achieving and thriving.
Supports, parent carer comms, high aspirations, experts on hand, and more...
The bit that jumped out at me was...
... weaponised, and lead to darker places. Like on social media, for example.
Anyway, I'm pretty certain the reading I did at home and school were entirely unconnected. I went to a grammar school that taught me to hate reading.
In spite of this I read, and wrote, a lot in my teen years. n=1
Sigh. Smacks more of more TES rage baiting. Which is fine if that's the metrics your US private equity overlords are demanding, I guess...
I haven't read the article, for reasons.
Reading is to draw on the resources of humanity and make the world a better place. It can, of course, be...

β Fully-Funded ESRC PhD Opportunity β @katiecebula.bsky.social is recruiting for a PhD studentship: quant analysis of admin data to explore the social inequality & child/family factors which might be associated over time with neurodivergent young peopleβs school attendance. Deadline: 24th March
Silly question... Here on Bluesky is it possible to run your "own version" with your "own algorithms" ? Is there any social media like that?
Because otherwise some USA Ai company won't get it's slice of the pie...
(I haven't read the press release yet)
Lol, none of this means anything to me, I'll be watching Barcelona with my partner, who cares about this stuff π€£π€£π€£
I thought this was a cutting political statement...
Yeah, I find it all fascinating, but as an "outsider" I'm trying to keep my commentary to a minimum. It's certainly more interesting trying to curate some topics rather than the speculation that happened between Jan and publication
Looking forward to your commentary this evening π€£
How are you proposing government stop social media being harmful?
Making companies open up their algorithms? Making patterns such as infinite scroll illegal? Putting legal limits on the amount of time children can spend per day on social media?
We can E numbers in food, not food.
Since January, I've been doing a "links" style newsletter on the SEND white paper. Available by email or LinkedIn if that's your thing (π @psalisbury.bsky.social)

Inclusion Bases... with the obvious Inclusion of @mrjlauder.bsky.social's piece from the other day.
By slicing off the curves.
Interpret that how you will... Because everyone will interpret it differently.
It's so clear from this article that gov needs to demand that social media companies open up their algorithms to scrutiny, and that harmful "additives" (the infinite scroll, promoting antagonistic content, etc) should be banned.

Not all mothers want chocolates or hand lotion. Mothers are more than lavender soap and talc. More than sauvignon blanc and flowers.

Why does the right wing take the dystopia novels as a playbook, and ignore the "let's be kind" novels completely?

I have some reservations, on behalf of marginalized and abused kids, but this is the best I've seen so far, but still goes too far...
I'm disappointed, but not surprised, that the actual consultation doc has no HTML version for basic web accessibility, nor an Easy Read version for people with learning disabilities.
So different versions of the questions are performative, not inclusive.
Yes, if education support is only going to be given for "evidence based" strategies of "what works". (Every child achieving and thriving, DfE 2026)
Wouldn't it be lovely to live in a world where every learner had their needs met regardless of diagnosis...
It would be nice to see a fully accessible (WCAG) version of the report, rather than just a PDF.
By "kids at risk" I mean marginalized kids such as trans, autistic, and abused kids for example, who have higher levels of self harm and suicide.
I'm curious what "Safer online alternatives that enable social connection without the same risk of harm as social media apps." looks like for marginalized and abused kids who need to find their crew.
Overall this overview seems to be very positive and useful, with "kids at risk" reservations...
Especially for that OFSTED job π€£π€£π€£
