Dervishes occupied a special place in religiously tolerant Istanbul. Through prayer, music and ecstatic dance, they tried to enter into a trance and thus come into contact with Allah. Twice a week they performed this dance ceremony, which visitors were allowed to watch. Vanmour must have regularly sat in the gallery to study the whirling of the dervishes.

This large, 70-gun British warship is in distress. A fierce gust of wind has broken one of its masts, and a sail has come loose. In 1672, Willem van de Velde II, together with his father, who was also a marine painter, entered the service of the English court. He made this painting and its companion, The Cannon Shot, in England.

So many flowers in a small glass of water! This must have made an exceedingly lavish impression on a 17th-century viewer. Flowers were expensive at the time; gardens would have had only a few flowers, surrounded by much greenery. Jan Brueghel II was a faithful follower of his father Jan Brueghel I. This sparkling still life is a variant of a painting by his father.

Coorte arranged the shells on a stone plinth against a dark background in such a way that each one receives attention, displaying its own form, colour, and structure. Coorte, moreover, painted them life size. These kinds of exotic shells were brought to the Netherlands in the ships of the Dutch East and West India Companies and were highly prized by collectors, who paid enormous amounts for them.

Charles van Beveren painted the sculptor Louis Royer and his wife after the couple had returned from Italy. Royer sits in his studio, surrounded by the works he produced during his years in Rome. These were purchased by the Dutch state on his return. Two of these sculptures are displayed in this gallery. Works by Royer also appear in the background of his wife’s portrait.

This scene represents the biblical story of the Israelite Samson and the Philistine Delilah. Delilah seduced Samson and lured him into revealing the secret of his superhuman strength, which he would lose if his hair were cut. Without his long hair he would be like any other mortal. Rembrandt painted Samson asleep on Delilah’s lap. She grasps Samson’s hair and signals the approaching man with scissors to be quiet.

In 1651–1652 the Dutch ambassador Joan Cunaeus and his secretary, Cornelis Speelman, travelled to Isfahan in Persia to stimulate trade in horses and silk. Speelman described the journey, lavish receptions and visits to ancient archeological sites. The two gentlemen are here probably being escorted by the Sultan of Bandar Abbas. Cunaeus wears a silk cloak, a gift from the shah.
