Portret van Johan Melchior Kemper, rechtsgeleerde en staatsman. Staande, ten voeten uit bij een tafeltje, met zijn linkerhand op een wetboek. Op de achtermuur plaketten van koning Willem I en de Nederlandse Leeuw. Op zijn borst draagt Kemper de versierselen van de benoeming tot Commandeur in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw, verleend op 18 november 1815 (in tegenstelling tot de datum november 1813 op het schilderij).

This sitter was a member of a prominent Dutch family. He served as bailiff and burgomaster of Alkmaar. In his right hand he holds a prayer nut encased in silver or gold, an extremely costly object for private devotion. He used it to demonstrate his piety, but also, and primarily, his affluence.

As his career progressed, Van Huysum produced floral still lifes that were increasingly exuberant. His palette became lighter and more transparent and he set his still lifes against a park-like background. Here the fruit, grapevine and hollyhocks are arranged so loosely and precariously that they risk tumbling from the marble plinth.

Her costume is adorned with lace, bows, and a heavy gold chain. Just visible on her back is one of her walking reins, which enabled mothers to support and guide their children’s first steps and prevent them from wandering off.

Dervishes occupied a special place in religiously tolerant Istanbul. Through prayer, music and ecstatic dance, they tried to enter into a trance and thus come into contact with Allah. Twice a week they performed this dance ceremony, which visitors were allowed to watch. Vanmour must have regularly sat in the gallery to study the whirling of the dervishes.
