In death, Emmett Till became an early martyr of the modern Civil Rights movement, when Jet magazine published photos of his battered face and body, in the casket his mother Mamie Till-Mobley insisted be left open for viewers to witness.
1962 Ballad written by young Bob Dylan for 14 year old Emmett Till, whose shocking, savage murder on this day 70 years ago, August 28, 1955, and the subsequent acquittal of his white killers, brought the nation’s attention to a long history of violent persecution.
