A Saucy Young Widower of Eighty-Four Elopes With A Widow of Forty The romantic elopement of a Northwich widower, aged eighty-four, with a widow of forty summers, came to light, and created considerable sensation in the town. A few days ago the widow left for Winsford, taking with her boxes of her own, and, it is presumed, her admirer's clothing. Subsequently the old man withdrew all his savings from the bank, and intimating to his daughter, with whom he lived, that he would return for tea, also disappeared.

London’s First Car Show? The facilities offered by the great building and extensive grounds of the Crystal Palace have many times, since its primary employment as the domicile of the first Great International Exhibition of all Nations in 1851, been turned to good account in fostering the industries of this nation. There exists at the moment in this country an industry—that of the manufacture of self-propelling vehicles for use upon common roads—which is scarcely yet beyond its nascent condition, but which is far more advanced, and indeed has assumed considerable magnitude, in other countries, and in regard to which proper publicity and demonstration cannot be given in this country under existing legislation, except in extensive private grounds such as those attached to the Crystal Palace.

March 9, 1863 – Sutlers’ Smuggling Efforts Every train that arrives and departs from the landing has a full representation of the bone and sinew of the army. The inveterate sutlers, though they go to an immense deal of trouble to devise modes of smuggling goods of a contraband nature through, generally are frustrated in the end, though they be successful enough to evade the authorities for a short time.

Police Use Hatchets in Saloon Raid Smash Bar, Mirror, Glasses, Etc., and Pour Beer Into the Gutter Chicago, March 9.—(AP)—Police, armed with hatchets, raided a near northside saloon last night and wrecked it after the manner made famous by Carrie Nation. In spite of the fact that the establishment had obtained an injunction against police interference, the raiders smashed the bar, smashing the mirror, glasses and other equipment and then, emptied beer into the gutters.

Wine Goes Begging In German Markets At 15 Cents a Quart BERLIN, March 6.—Thousands of gallons of two and three year old wine are going bogging at 15 cents a quart In the wine-growing valleys of the Moselle, Saar and Ruhr, where the growers are desperately in need of money and are willing to convert their stocks into cash at almost any figure. Even at 15 cents a quart, which is exclusive of the federal tax of 20 per cent, there are few buyers.

The American Tariff House of Lords—March 3 The Earl of CLARENDON wished to ask the noble lord the Secretary for Foreign Affairs, what compensation would be given to merchants who were injured by the new tariff, established by the United States, several provisions of which constituted an infraction of treaties existing between that country and England. There was great injustice done to British merchants, and by that very country which took every care to insist on the full appropriation to itself of all rights or advantages guaranteed by the very treaties they were constantly violating or evading.

What Imperialism Has Done El Nacionalista de Ponce for Feb. 20th in an extremely interesting article gives its readers to understand that the Porto Rican people have been reduced to the level of serfs without religion, patriotism, or shame, and that a government of gold has been constituted here for the benefit of Yankee corporations. Yankee imperialism is in need of servile Porto Rican labor it contends.

Coolidge Believes Air Fund Too Big Regards $85,000,000 Program of Navy Conflicts With Peace Economy. President Coolidge does not approve the five-year building program for the Naval Air Service, calling for an appropriation of $85,000,000, which has been reported out by the House naval affairs Committee. The President considers this sum far too large to coincide with his ideas of a peace time expenditure for aircraft. He also thinks the amount exceeds what the Aircraft Board appointed by him to make recommendations for proper development had in mind.

Fishing From The Wharf Sir, —I beg to ask why fishing on the Queen-street Wharf has been put a stop to. This is hard on the poor. Many a scanty meal, if supplemented by a few schnapper, would be more appetising and satisfying to a hungry family. The order against fishing on the wharf cannot have arisen for want of space. Whole bees are often without a ship, so that downright cussedness must have caused this hard order to be issued; Wellington, where there is three times the shipping, the wharf is crowded with fishermen, all day long.
